Kenneth Carl “Kenny” Feathers, resident of the Somerville Community and former Somerville Chief of Police, departed this life Friday morning, January 3, 2014 at the Methodist Hospital in Somerville where he had been a patient for one day. He was 52 years of age.
Services of Remembrance with Law Enforcement Honors for Mr. Feathers were conducted at 1 P.M. Wednesday, January 8th at the Somerville First Baptist Church with Bro. Phil Lovelace, of Brownsville, former minister of the church, officiating. Personal remarks were given by a friend, Raymond Kelly of Somerville. Interment followed in the Hood Cemetery in the Warren Community. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes and Cremation Center — Main Chapel of Somerville.
Mr. Feathers was born April 7, 1961 in Memphis. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bro. Samuel Carl Feathers, a longtime Fayette County Baptist Minister, and Ayako Ushizima “Pat” Feathers. He received his education in the Fayette County Public School System and furthered his education through countless inservice and other educational programs offered through local, state and federal departments.
He was a resident of Fayette County for much of his life and was a devoted member of Somerville First Baptist Church, where he served as a Sunday School teacher and deacon. He was employed by the State of Tennessee Law Enforcement for over 20 years and for the majority of the time, he handled and trained one of the most successful drug and narcotics canines in the country. He was later employed with the Somerville Police Department and was appointed the Chief of Police in 2001 where he faithfully served his community until receiving injuries in a fundraising event on May 17, 2008 to benefit Fayette Countians. During his career, Chief Feathers enjoyed teaching handgun classes and served as an instructor for the firing range where he qualified multiple police officers of various law enforcement departments.
Mr. Feathers’ dedication to community service was evidenced in his participation in numerous associations that included being a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association, the Chiefs of Police Association, the Drug Task Force and U.S. Customs. In earlier years, he assisted his father with local hunter safety courses and became a teacher of the course when he turned 18. Mr. Feathers enjoyed outdoor activities that included hunting, fishing and playing golf but being a great father to his children was his first priority in life.
Mr. Feathers is survived by his daughter, Chelsea Feathers of Somerville and his son, Blaine Feathers of Somerville.
