Leon Hughes Hopper

Leon Hughes Hopper, age 81, resident of Oakland and husband of Virginia Hime Hopper, departed this life Thursday morning, January 5, 2017 at his residence.

Services of Remembrance for Mr. Hopper were conducted at 11 A.M. Monday, January 9, 2017 at the St. Paul United Methodist Church in Lakeland with Rev. Mike Morris, pastor of the church, officiating. Interment followed in the Memphis Memory Gardens Cemetery. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes & Cremation Center - West Chapel at Oakland.

Mr. Hopper was born May 1, 1935 in Troy, Tennessee and was a graduate of Troy High School. He was employed as an automotive service manager for many years before his retirement and served at the Masonic Blue Lodge in Somerville, was a 32nd Degree Mason and was a member of the Shriners. Mr. Hopper was a lifelong resident of the West Tennessee area and enjoyed special times with his grandchildren, reading car magazines, auto racing and automobiles.

Mr. Hopper is survived by his wife, Virginia Hime Hopper, whom he married November 25, 1953; his sons, Steve Hopper (Shand) of Bartlett, Stan Hopper (Melinda) of Memphis; sister, Ruth Evelyn Harper (Edward) of Troy; four grandchildren, Jennifer Fitzgibbon (John) of Bartlett, Jessica May (Mickey) of Bartlett, Justin Hopper of Memphis, Lauren Hopper of Memphis; and three great-grandchildren, Ellie, Ava and Caleb Fitzgibbon.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Hurtle Glen Hopper and Ruth Evelyn Hughes Hopper and his brother, Glen Brown Hopper.

Those honored to serve as pallbearers were Bill Cummins, Al Fillippelli, Robert Goodin, Wes Holmes, Joel McMurry and David Williams. Honorary pallbearers were Bob Earley, Jerry Windham and Bill Buff.
