1941—2012
Howard Leonard Gustafson, Jr., resident of the Oakland Community, husband of Carolyn Gustafson and retired Registered Piano Technician departed this life Saturday morning March 24, 2012 at his residence. He was 70 years of age and died following an extended illness.
Services of Remembrance for Mr. Gustafson were conducted at 2 PM Monday, March 26th, at the First Baptist Church in Somerville with Dr. Ken Story, pastor of the church, officiating. Interment was private. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes & Cremation Center – West Chapel of Oakland.
Mr. Gustafson was born October 28, 1941 in Memphis, the son of the former Mavis Mildred Irby and the late Howard Leonard Gustafson. After receiving his high school education, he received both his Bachelor and Masters Degrees from the University of Memphis. He was married August 3, 1963 to the former Carolyn Fitts of Memphis, who survives.
Mr. Gustafson was a self-employed Registered Piano Technician in the Memphis area before his retirement last year. He had been a resident of the Oakland Community for the past 16 years and was a devoted member of the First Baptist Church of Somerville. Mr. Gustafson will be remembered as a person who loved gardening and woodworking. He was an outdoorsman and a multi-talented person who enjoyed natural sciences and teaching of Sunday School through the Nursing Home Ministries of his church.
In addition to his wife of 48 years, Mr. Gustafson is survived by one daughter, Wende Gustafson of Orlando, Florida; one son, Howard L. Gustafson, III (Sarah) of Texarkana, Arkansas; his mother, Mavis Crutchfield of Memphis; one brother, Carl Gustafson of Memphis; and three grandchildren, Matthew, David and Benjamin Gustafson.
The family requests that memorials be directed to the Somerville First Baptist Church, 12685 South Main St, Somerville, TN 38068.
