LESTER GILBERT "BUDDY" CARPENTER, a resident of Oak Ridge, Tennessee, former resident of Shelby County and a native Fayette Countian passed away at 7:20 P.M. Friday, May 22, 2009 at his residence at Oak Ridge. He was 80 years of age and died following an extended illness of several years.
Celebration Of Life Services for Mr. Carpenter were conducted at 1 P.M. Monday, May 25th at the Brunswick Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Shelby County with Rev. Cory Williams, Pastor of the church, officiating. Graveside Interment Services with Military Honors followed at 3 p.m. Monday in the Belmont Cemetery near Mason in Fayette County. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes-Main Chapel of Somerville.
Mr. Carpenter was born August 11, 1928 in Moscow to the late James and Jessie Furcron Carpenter. He was a graduate of Fayette County High School in Somerville, Class of 1946 and a United States Navy Veteran having served from 1952 to 1954.
He was the husband of Mary Harvey, a native of Fayette County who survives.
Mr. Carpenter was employed by International Harvester in Memphis for thirty years before his retirement in 1978.
He was a longtime member of the Brunswick Cumberland Presbyterian Church in the Brunswick Community of Shelby County.
Mr. and Mrs. Carpenter moved to Oak Ridge four and a half years ago to be near their daughter and family.
He will be remembered for his love of the simple things in life and for his devotion to his family, church and community.
In addition to his wife of fifty-eight years, Mr. Carpenter is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Louise Carpenter of Maumelle, AR; daughter and son-in-law, Leslie and Greg Snodgrass of Oak Ridge; sister Bertha Mae Dooney of Memphis and four grandchildren: Anna Martinez, Neil Carpenter, Mary Beth Snodgrass and Sam Snodgrass.
Casket bearers included family members and friends.
