LETHA SWAIN "Leigh" MCDANIEL, a resident of the Oakland Community, retired Bookkeeper and wife of the late Walter McDaniel died at 7:35 P.M. Sunday, May 31, 2009 at her residence on Gordon Drive. She was 75 years of age and died following a one-year illness.
Funeral services for Mrs. McDaniel were conducted at 10 A.M. Wednesday, June 3rd at the Peebles West Funeral Chapel at Oakland with Rev. Carl Meyer, Pastor of the Oakland First Baptist Church, officiating. Interment followed in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in the Hickory Withe Community. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes-West Chapel of Oakland.
A native of Blytheville, Arkansas, Mrs. McDaniel was born April 6, 1934. She was preceded in death by her parents, Elijah David Swain and Ethel Edna Waldrip Swain. She was educated in the Arkansas Public School System and was a graduate of the Gosnell Community High School near Blytheville.
She was married November 9, 1956 to Walter McDaniel, a Certified Public Accountant who preceded her in death on November 22, 1987.
Mr. and Mrs. McDaniel moved to Fayette County thirty-six years ago and she was a resident of the Hickory Withe and Oakland areas during this time.
Mrs. McDaniel was a homemaker throughout most of her life and in earlier years was employed as a Bookkeeper for the Power Equipment Company in Memphis, before her retirement eighteen years ago.
She was a member of the Oakland First Baptist Church and enjoyed her affiliation in the Oakland Chapter of the Red Hat Lady's Society.
As long as health permitted Mrs. McDaniel was an active supporter of the area chapter of the Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Organization.
Survivors of Mrs. McDaniel include her daughter, Cassandra Wright (Steven) of Kingsport, TN; her son, David McDaniel (Amanda) of Shamrock, TX; her niece and caregiver, Elaine Brandenburg and husband Greg of Oakland; three sisters: Sylvia Downs of Memphis; Margie Pennel of Oakland and Mary Ethridge of Galveston, TX and three grandchildren: Jeff McDaniel, Jackie Johns and Michael McDaniel.
Those honored to serve as casket bearers were Steven Wright, Greg Brandenburg, Bob White, Carl Doyle, Herbert McElravey and Jeff Davis.
