Leonadus Franklin “Frank” Yancey, lifelong resident of the Oakland Community, retired Post Master for Oakland and husband of Robbie Matheson Yancey peacefully departed this life Tuesday evening, November 19, 2013 in the comfort of his home. He was 91 years of age and died following a brief illness.
Services of Remembrance with Military Honors for Mr. Yancey were conducted at 2 P.M. Saturday, November 23rd at the Peebles West Funeral Chapel at Oakland with Rev. Donald Park of the Faith United Methodist Church officiating. He was assisted by Dr. Robert Martin of Paris, Tennessee, former pastor of the church. Interment followed in the Oakland Town Cemetery. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes & Cremation Center — West Chapel at Oakland.
Mr. Yancey was born September 27, 1924 in Oakland. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Polk Yancey and Susan Elizabeth Adams Yancey, early residents of Fayette County. He received his education in the Fayette County Public School System and was a graduate of the Fayette County High School in Somerville, Class of 1943. He served his country in the United States Navy during the World War II Period on the U.S.S. Mustin (DD-413). He was married June 3, 1950 to the former Robbie Irene Matheson, who survives.
Mr. Yancey participated for many years in the business, community and religious activities of Fayette County. He served on the Board of Directors of Chickasaw Electric Cooperative for 39 years and as an Oakland Alderman for 24 years. He was a devoted member of the Faith United Methodist Church in Oakland. Mr. Yancey was a cattleman for 62 years and received much pleasure in his farm land. He operated Yancey Feed and Farm Supply in Downtown Oakland for a number of years. He will be remembered as a family-oriented person who enjoyed special times with his family and those in his community.
In addition to his wife of 64 years, Mr. Yancey is survived by his daughter, Ann Conley (Jim) of Walsenburg, CO; his son, Lee Yancey (Les) of Oakland; his son-in-law, Brian Moore of Germantown; seven grandchildren, Amy Howard (Clay), Emily Conley, Katie Clements (Greg), Justin Leonadus Yancey, Chris Moore, Meghan Moore, Alex Carlew; and two great grandchildren, Aidan Howard and Sloane Clements.
Mr. Yancey was preceded in death by his daughter, Teresa Yancey Moore; two sisters, Ethel McCarty, Elizabeth Griffin; and two brothers, I.P. (Perkins) Yancey and Howell Yancey.
Those honored to serve as casketbearers were Justin Yancey, Christopher Moore, Clay Howard, Greg Clements, John Paul Stevens and John Trotter, Jr.
