Lois Drumwright Powers, former resident of the Somerville and Oakland Communities in Fayette County for many years and retired Office Manager for Powers & Son Jewelers in Somerville for 47 years before her retirement in 2005, died Wednesday, July 9, 2008 at the Riverview Medical Center in Red Bank, New Jersey. She was 92 years of age and had moved in recent years to Holmdel, New Jersey to reside with her daughter.
Funeral Services for Mrs. Powers were conducted at 3 P.M. Sunday, July 13th at Peebles Main Funeral Chapel in Somerville with Mr. Daniel Garrett, of Franklin, Tennessee, a nephew of Mrs. Powers officiating. Interment followed in the Somerville City Cemetery. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes - Main Chapel of Somerville.
Mrs. Powers was born in El Paso, Arkansas on August 11, 1915 to Benjamin and Mattie Harvey Drumwright, the last survivor of her nine siblings. She lived in Fayette County all her adult life, moving here in 1938 with her husband, Dr. R. H. Powers, an Optometrist and Watch Maker, in Somerville for many years before his death in 1958. Dr. Powers and his son, Rex Powers, owned Powers and Son Jewelry Store on Market Street in Somerville that continues to be operated by the Powers family as one of the oldest retail businesses in Somerville.
Mrs. Powers was a homemaker and caregiver to her family. She began working at Powers & Son Jewelry Store after being widowed in 1958 and continued working until 2005. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed many happy hours creating a beautiful yard at her residence on Highway 64 East in Somerville and later at her Oakland residence. Mrs. Powers was a Christian, and enjoyed traveling extensively throughout her life, visiting the Caribbean, Hawaii, Alaska, as well as many European cities and much of the Continental United States.
Mrs. Powers is survived by her daughter, Rowena Powers Livingston and her son-in-law, Donald B. Livingston of Holmdel, New Jersey; five grandchildren: William A. Hickey, Jr. of Rochester, MN; Michael H. Hickey of Augusta, WI; Darrell B. Livingston of Fair Haven, NJ; Rhett D. Livingston of Bluffton, SC and Brooke Livingston Visentini of Hoboken, NJ. Besides her immediate family, Mrs. Powers leaves many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Regina Powers Hickey; a son, Rhett Douglas Powers and an infant son, Roger Post Powers.
Those honored to serve as casketbearers were Darrell Livingston, Rhett Livingston, Bill Hickey, Rex Powers, III, Randy Powers and Jacopo Visentini.
