Lois Rodgers Spencer, longtime resident of the Somerville and Whiteville Communities and a person involved in church and community activities for many years died Sunday morning, November 11, 2012 at the Bolivar General Hospital. She was 90 years of age and died following an extended illness.
Services of Remembrance for Mrs. Spencer were conducted at 2 P.M. Wednesday, November 14th at the Mt. Moriah Baptist Church near Whiteville. Officiating ministers were Bro. Bob Campbell retired director of the Fayette Baptist Association and Bro. David Peace of the Mt. Moriah Baptist Church. Personal remarks and reflections were given by a longtime friend, Earl Dowdy. Special music was provided by Amy Crafton, pianist. Interment followed in the Mt. Moriah Cemetery. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes and Cremation Center — Main Chapel of Somerville.
Mrs. Spencer was born April 9, 1922 in the Mt. Moriah Community. She was preceded in death by her parents, Rob Rodgers and Oma Wiles Rodgers, early residents of the Mt. Moriah Community. She received her education in the Hardeman County Public School System and was a graduate of the Whiteville High School. Mrs. Spencer was blessed with two devoted companions. She was first married to Wayne Pepper, who died in 1957 and was later married to T.J. Spencer, who died in 1986.
As a young person, Mrs. Spencer taught school in the Mt. Moriah Community and later served as a teacher at the Union Academy in the Laconia Community. A dedicated homemaker throughout her life, Mrs. Spencer was a lifelong resident of the Whiteville and Somerville Communities. She was a devoted member for many years of the Mt. Moriah Baptist Church, where she participated in numerous church activities.
Mrs. Spencer will be remembered as an accomplished seamstress who enjoyed flowers, home decorating and gardening. Her most cherished memories were made around her family and friends that she held most dear. Those who knew her were blessed by her warm smile and uplifting spirit. Mrs. Spencer’s life was a living testimony to her Christian faith.
Mrs. Spencer is survived by her daughter, Elaine Culver (Johnny) of Bartlett; two stepsons, Jimmy Spencer (Ann) of Somerville, Billy Spencer (Louella) of Indianapolis, IN; four step-grandchildren, ten step-great grandchildren and a large number of nieces and nephews.
Those honored to serve as casketbearers were Daniel Rogers, Carey Rogers, Robert Pepper, Winston Rodgers, Jimmy Rogers, Jr. and Bruce Rogers.
Honorary casketbearers were William Rodgers and L.A. Rogers.
