LORENE DAVIS DUNCAN, resident of Mt. Pisgah Road near Somerville and retired Grocery Store Owner, died at 2:10 P.M. Tuesday, August 19, 2008 at her residence. She was 78 years of age and died following an illness of several months.
Funeral services for Mrs. Duncan were conducted at 2 P.M. Friday, August 22nd at the Peebles Main Funeral Chapel in Somerville with the Rev. Eddie Martin, Pastor of the Christ Church at Brownsville, officiating. Interment followed in the Mt. Pisgah Cemetery on Somerville-LaGrange Road. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes-Main Chapel of Somerville.
A native of Tipton County, Tennessee, Mrs. Duncan was born December 18, 1929. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charlie E. Davis and Martha "Mattie" Kyzer Davis. She moved at an early age with her family to Fayette County where she was educated in the Fayette County Public School System. Mrs. Duncan was married in 1947 to George Odell Duncan, World War II Army Veteran who died February 24, 1987.
Mrs. Duncan was of the Baptist Faith and was a lifelong resident of Tipton and Fayette Counties. She had been a resident of Mt. Pisgah for the past 48 years. She was a homemaker and also owned and operated with her husband, the Duncan's Grocery on the Somerville-LaGrange Road for many years before her retirement.
She will be remembered as a loving wife, mother and grandmother who enjoyed fishing, flower and vegetable gardening and art. Mrs. Duncan received much enjoyment from preparing food and serving it to her family and friends.
Survivors of Mrs. Duncan include a loving companion, Dewey Perkins; her daughter, Martha Ann Henry of Somerville; three sons: George E. Duncan (Carolyn) of Brownsville; Jimmy L. Duncan (Jan) of Collierville and William E. Duncan (Wilma) of Somerville; her sister Mildred Moore of Michigan City, Mississippi; her brother Willie Frank Davis of Bolivar; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Those honored to serve as casketbearers were David Culver, Duke Duncan, James Duncan, Tony Duncan, Johnny Hendrix and Bud Hopkins.
Willie Frank Davis, Mrs. Duncan's brother, served as honorary casketbearer.
