Louis Franklin “Sonny” Lemmon, longtime resident of the Burrowtown Community in Fayette County and husband of Carolyn Williams Lemmon, departed this life Monday morning, February 3, 2014 at his residence. He was 89 years of age and died following an extended illness.
Services of Remembrance for Mr. Lemmon were conducted at 10 A.M. Thursday, February 6th at the Peebles West Funeral Chapel at Oakland. Personal remarks were given by a family friend, Steve Butler of Lakeland. Interment followed in the Gratitude United Methodist Church Cemetery near Arlington. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes & Cremation Center — West Chapel at Oakland.
Mr. Lemmon was born November 13, 1924 in the Rosemark Community of Shelby County. He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl Lemmon and Stella Hewitt Lemmon. He received his education at the Bolton High School and was married March 2, 1948 to the former Carolyn Williams, who survives. Mrs. Lemmon was a homemaker and also a grocery merchant in the Gallaway Community for over 35 years before her retirement.
Mr. Lemmon had a lifelong love for farming, agriculture and farm animals. He was employed in earlier years by the Ford Motor Company in Memphis and the State of Tennessee Highway Department at Arlington. He will be remembered as a Master Gardener who continued his love of gardening until two years ago. He was known throughout the area for his bountiful crop of tomatoes, soybeans and corn. He received much pleasure in caring for his cows and pigs as long as health permitted. He was a member of the Gratitude United Methodist Church and had been a resident of the Burrowtown Community for the past 50 years.
In addition to his wife of almost 66 years, Mr. Lemmon is survived by five daughters, Janette Hampton (Bill) of Arlington, TN, Wanda Steward (Dutch) of Seabrook, TX, Christy Knight (Terry) of Arlington, TN, Anita Solley (David) of Burrowtown Community, Connie Lemmon of Burrowtown Community; his son, Steve Lemmon of Burrowtown Community; three brothers, Howard Lemmon of Memphis, Elvis Lemmon of Arlington, TN, Aubrey Lemmon of Mason; fourteen grandchildren, thirty-two great grandchildren and thirteen great great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Kenneth Lemmon who died in 1997 and his granddaughter, Laurie Hampton who died in 2011.
Those honored to serve as casketbearers were Sonny Edward Hampton, David Folley, Jr., Allen Steward, Mike Pilkington, Randy Pugh and Chip Childers.
Honorary casketbearers were Donnie Dykes, Jacob Pilkington and Charlie Pugh.
The family requests that memorials be directed to the Gratitude United Methodist Church, 10454 Millington-Arlington Road, Arlington, TN 38002.
