Lula Maicel Kelley Brown, resident of the Saulsbury Community in Hardeman County and wife of the late Jack E. Brown, departed this life Friday morning, May 30, 2014 in Memphis. She was 89 years of age and died following a brief illness.
Services of Remembrance for Mrs. Brown were conducted at 2 P.M. Wednesday, June 4th at the Peebles Main Funeral Chapel in Somerville with Bro. Rickey Watkins officiating. Interment followed in the Wood Cemetery at Hickory Valley, Tennessee. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes and Cremation Center — Main Chapel of Somerville.
Mrs. Brown was born May 4, 1925 in the Hickory Valley Community. She was preceded in death by her parents, James Kelley and Roxanne Odom Kelley, early residents of the Hickory Valley area. She received her education in the Hardeman County Public School System and was married May 18, 1949 to Jack E. Brown, an employee for the Illinois Central Railroad Company before his retirement. He preceded Mrs. Brown in death on October 17, 2003.
Mrs. Brown was a resident of Memphis in earlier years and was employed as an inspector for the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company in Memphis before retirement. She later returned to Hardeman County and had been a resident of the Saulsbury Community for a number of years.
Mrs. Brown was a member of the Hickory Valley Baptist Church and will be remembered as a true “Southern Lady” who had a deep love and devotion for her sons before their death.
Mrs. Brown is survived by her sister, Sissy Powers of Raleigh, TN; her brother, Manuel “Rooster” Kelley of Grand Junction, TN; nine grandchildren, Christopher Brown, Jennifer Etheridge, Jamie Brown Bynum, Charles Edward Brown, Harley Brown, Brian Brown, Justin Brown, James Brown; and a number of great grandchildren.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her sons, James Edward Brown who died November 15, 2012 and Michael Claitor Brown who died December 18, 2013. She was also preceded in death by a lifelong deceased friend, Mrs. Geneva Sides of Moscow.
Those honored to serve as casketbearers were Charles Brown, Blayne Etheridge, Sean Power, Justin Brown, Christopher Brown and Harley Brown.
