Mabel (Sealand) Wiles

September 11, 1922 — August 16, 2013

Mabel Sealand Wiles, resident of the Laconia Community for many years and wife of the late Ashley G. Wiles, Sr., longtime Fayette County surveyor, departed this life Friday morning, August 16, 2013 at the St. Francis Hospital in Bartlett where she had been a patient for two weeks. She was 90 years of age and died following a brief illness.

Services of Remembrance for Mrs. Wiles were conducted at 2 P.M. Monday, August 19th at the Peebles Main Funeral Chapel in Somerville with Dr. Clinton Buck, pastor of the Mt. Carmel Cumberland Presbyterian Church officiating. Interment followed in the Old Union Cemetery at Laconia. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes and Cremation Center — Main Chapel of Somerville.

Mrs. Wiles was born September 11, 1922 in Dyersburg, Tennessee. She was preceded in death by her parents, Orlen F. Sealand and Margie Bryant Sealand. She received her education in the Tennessee Public School System and was married June 2, 1940 to Ashley G. Wiles, Sr., a longtime Fayette County surveyor, who preceded her in death on July 18, 1973.

Mrs. Wiles lived in the Laconia Community of Fayette County since 1940 and was a devoted member of the Mt. Carmel Cumberland Presbyterian Church at Laconia. She was associated with her family in the operation of the Wiles Surveying Company and served as secretary of the family-owned business for over 60 years before her retirement.

Mrs. Wiles was devoted to her family, her community and her church. She enjoyed sewing that included both embroidery and crewelwork. She loved to read and enjoyed gardening and canning of foods. Mrs. Wiles was a person who dedicated her life to caring for her family; the perfect example of what a wife, mother, grandmother, sibling and friend should be. She enjoyed simple pleasures and was loved by many.

Mrs. Wiles is survived by her daughter, Ramelle W. Gray of Somerville; three sons, Ashley G. Wiles, Jr. of Memphis, James O. Wiles, Sr. of Somerville, Harry N. Wiles of Somerville; her sister, Betty J. Malone of Whiteville; brother, Milton Sealand of Oak Ridge, TN; nine grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Annie Laura Bruce, Dorothy S. Trawick and two brothers, Harry Dean Sealand and Nelson Sealand.

Those honored to serve as casketbearers were Van Wiles, Jimmy Wiles, Joshua Wiles, Dale Gray, Mike Cannon and Kemp Boykin.

The family requests that memorials be directed to the Mt. Carmel Cumberland Presbyterian Church or the Old Union Cemetery, 106 East Marginal Street, Somerville, TN 38068.
