MARIE ROSE BURROW HUGHES, a resident of the Somerville Community, former resident of Memphis and a native Fayette Countian died at 5:42 A.M. Monday, June 29, 2009 at the National Healthcare Center in Somerville where she had resided for over a year. She was 84 years of age and died following an extended illness.
Funeral services for Ms. Hughes were conducted at 2 P.M. Wednesday, July 1st at the Peebles Main Funeral Chapel in Somerville with Chaplain Richard Kilpatrick of the Caris Hospice Organization in Somerville, officiating. Interment followed in the Walls Cemetery at Braden, Tennessee. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes-Main Chapel of Somerville.
Ms. Hughes was born March 28, 1925 in Somerville the daughter of the late Olian Banks Burrow and the late Eunice Dempsey Burrow early residents of the Braden Community.
She was educated in the Fayette County Public School System and was a graduate of the Fayette County High School in Somerville and completed her education at the Memphis School of Commerce.
Ms. Hughes served as a Stenographer for the Coca Cola Bottling Company in Memphis in earlier years and in later years for the Morgan Keegan Investment Group, in Memphis.
She was a resident of Memphis throughout much of her adult life and retained her membership in the Braden United Methodist Church where she joined as a young person.
She received much enjoyment from preparing food for family and friends and was an avid lover of the beach, sun and water, enjoying many travels to Florida during her lifetime.
She had a great love for people and for life in general. She was an avid conversationalist and her love of color was always prominent in her dress and accessories.
Ms. Hughes is survived by a number of nieces and nephews as well as her caregiver and special friend for over fifty years, Bettye Davis, of Somerville.
Those honored to serve as casket bearers were Hubert Barcroft, Jack Burrow, Layne Burrow, Terry Hernandez, Tom Pratt and Jimmy Wiles.
