MARIE HENLEY WILES, longtime resident of the Somerville Community, retired Nurse at Morris Clinic and wife of the late Jeff Wiles died Saturday afternoon, January 9, 2010 at her residence in Somerville. She was 85 years of age and died following an illness of several months.
Funeral services for Mrs. Wiles were conducted at 10 A.M. Tuesday, January 12th at the Peebles Main Funeral Chapel in Somerville with Dr. Clinton Buck, Pastor of the Mt. Carmel Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Laconia, officiating. Interment followed in the Mount Olive Cemetery in the District 15 Community of Fayette County. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes-Main Chapel of Somerville.
Mrs. Wiles was born August 23, 1924 in Fayette County. She was preceded in death by her parents, William Pinkney Henley, Sr. and Ethel Rankin Henley, early residents of the District 15 Community.
She received her education in the Fayette County Public School System and was first married to Edward Daniel Umbarger who died in 1949.
She was later married to Jeff McCarley Wiles of Fayette County, Somerville Merchant and Employee of Somerville Bank & Trust Company before his death in 2004.
Mrs. Wiles served as a Nurse in Fayette County for thirty-eight years and was a familiar figure at the former Morris Clinic in Somerville for many years before her retirement.
She had been a member of the Mount Olive Baptist Church throughout her life and faithfully attended with her husband the Mount Carmel Cumberland Presbyterian Church at Laconia as long as health permitted.
She was a lifelong resident of Fayette County and will be remembered as a caregiver to many and a dedicated wife, mother and grandmother.
Mrs. Wiles enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening and was known as an "immaculate housekeeper". She enjoyed shopping, University of Tennessee Athletics and special times with family members and friends.
Survivors of Mrs. Wiles include three sons: Marvin L. Umbarger of Somerville; J. P. Umbarger of Summertown, TN and Willie Jeff Wiles of Somerville; her sister, Doris Johnson of Memphis; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and husbands, she was preceded in death by four sisters and three brothers.
Those honored to serve as casket bearers were Carl Murrell Parks, Bobby Parks, Gary Gaugh, Jamie Umbarger, Vinnie Schmidt and Timmy Joyner.
