Marilyn “Dutchie” Miller Cook, age 86, a resident of the Hickory Withe Community and a member of First Baptist Church in Somerville, Tennessee, died Thursday, March 1, 2018 at the Pine Meadows Healthcare Center in Bolivar, Tennessee.
Graveside Services for Mrs. Cook were conducted at 3 P.M. Sunday, March 4, 2018 at the Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Hickory Withe. The officiating minister was Bro. Phil Lovelace and music was provided by Dr. Stephen White. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes & Cremation Center – Main Chapel of Somerville.
Dutchie was born March 22, 1931 in the Kirk Community and was married to the late Audey Hutchens of Memphis, Tennessee. She later married Calvin Best Cook. The couple started their married life in Memphis and later moved to rural Mississippi where they raised their sons. The couple returned to the Hickory Withe Community in the 1980’s. Dutchie retired from Saw Textiles in Bartlett, Tennessee in 1996.
Dutchie was an avid gardener and she enjoyed every aspect of raising, harvesting, preparing, and sharing food from her garden. She had a green thumb and could make anything grow simply by sticking it in the dirt!
Dutchie’s heart was full of love for her family and God. She spent her early retirement years caring for her grandchildren, great grandchildren, and children from the community in her home. Children under her care were rocked, spoiled, disciplined, and loved. She had an infectious smile and a hearty laugh that welcomed all who entered her home. Dutchie was known for her home cooking, especially her biscuits! Her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren would be served a pan full of hot biscuits every time they visited. A visitor never left her home hungry, or feeling unloved.
Dutchie was preceded in death by her parents, Eva Case and Jack High, her husband, Calvin Best Cook, her brother, Maury High, and her sister, Eva Jeanette High McDowell. She is survived by her three sons, Audey Wayne Hutchens of Eads, TN, Calvin Eugene Cook (Marie) of Selmer, TN, and Dickey Ray Cook (Kim) of Bolivar, TN. She loved spending time with her grandchildren, Joshua Cook (Shannon) of Memphis, TN, Marilyn Philmore (Terrance) of Selmer, TN, Jackie Yearwood of Selmer, TN, Sarah Cook of Selmer, TN, Tyler Ray Cook (Shelby) of Arlington, TN and Kaitlyn Jane Cook of Bolivar, TN. Dutchie had 4 great grandchildren. Dutchie is also survived by her brother, Franklin Douglas High of White Bluff, TN, her sister-in-law, Denise High of Georgia and a host of nieces and nephews.
