Marjorie Jennette Torkell, resident of Arlington, former resident of the Moscow Community and wife of the late Rev. William Earl “Bill” Torkell, Sr. departed this life Tuesday evening, March 19, 2013 at the Methodist Hospice Residence in Memphis where she had been a patient for four days. She was 75 years of age and died following an extended illness.
Services Honoring the Life of Mrs. Torkell were conducted at 10 A.M. Friday, March 22nd at the Macon United Methodist Church in Macon, Tennessee. The officiating ministers were Rev. Larry Tubbs, pastor of the Macon United Methodist Church and Chaplain Chris Bounds. Interment followed in the Fayette County Memorial Park Cemetery on Highway 64. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes & Cremation Center — West Chapel at Oakland.
Mrs. Torkell was born January 2, 1938 in Nashville, Tennessee. She was preceded in death by her parents, James K. Jennette and Irene Pewitt Jennette. She received her education in the Davidson County Public School System and completed her education at the David Lipscomb University in Nashville. In earlier years, Mrs. Torkell was employed by the Casual Corner Ladies Clothiers in Memphis and in recent years was employed by the YMCA in Collierville.
Mrs. Torkell served as a pastor’s wife in Fayette County and surrounding areas for a number of years and was a resident of the Moscow Community during her husband’s ministry at United Methodist Churches that included the Piperton, Rossville, Moscow and Macon Communities. Rev. Torkell was well-known in the Fayette County area for his Methodist Church Ministry, his Prison System Ministry and serving as Chaplain in the Methodist Hospital Systems that included the Methodist Hospital in Somerville. She complemented her husband’s ministry with her kind mannerisms and concern for others.
Mrs. Torkell enjoyed the friendship of many during her husband’s ministry. Shopping and having lunch with friends and church members were favorite pastimes. Mrs. Torkell left a legacy of faith, service, devotion and love for family, friends, church and community.
Mrs. Torkell is survived by her son, William Earl Torkell, Jr. (Lisa) of Arlington; her brother, James A. Jennette of Chattanooga, TN; six grandchildren and two great grandsons. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Pamela Dawn Emerson.
Those honored to serve as casketbearers were Mark Barnes, Drew Clothier, Michael McLaren, Brian Robinson, Will Sanders and Grayson Torkell.
Honorary casketbearers were George Emerson, Bret Shaw, Jack Smith and Robert Torti.
The family requests that memorials be directed to LeBonheur Children’s Hospital Foundation, P.O. Box 41817, Memphis, TN 38174 or to any church that was served in past years by Rev. Torkell.
