Mary Elizabeth McNabb Hurst, longtime resident of the Somerville Community and wife of the late James Warren Hurst, Sr. departed this life Monday evening, October 7, 2013 at her residence. She was 92 years of age and died following a brief illness.
Services of Remembrance for Mrs. Hurst were conducted at 2 P.M. Friday, October 11th at the Peebles Main Funeral Chapel in Somerville with Bro. Phil Lovelace of Brownsville, former pastor of the Somerville First Baptist Church, officiating. Interment followed in the Somerville City Cemetery. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes and Cremation Center – Main Chapel of Somerville.
Mrs. Hurst was born March 2, 1921 in Fayette County. She was the last of eight children of the late Horace Bell McNabb and Media Akin McNabb. She received her education in the Fayette County Public School System and was a graduate of Fayette County High School. She was the wife of the late James Warren Hurst, Sr., retired self-employed truck operator, who preceded her in death on June 17, 1984.
Mrs. Hurst was an active member of her community for many years and was a former employee of Douglas Department Store and Myer’s Flower Shop before her retirement. She was a member of the Somerville First Baptist Church for much of her life and participated in many church activities that included singing in their Senior Adults Choir and caring for children in the church nursery.
Mrs. Hurst will be remembered for her “green thumb” and had a lifelong love for flowers and vegetable gardening. Her outgoing personality and everpresent smile will be missed by her family and all of those who drew inspiration from her kind spirit. She was blessed with good health throughout her life and remained active, living in her own home and caring for her garden until recent months.
Mrs. Hurst is survived by two devoted grandchildren, Gwen Meadows and Russell Hurst, both of Somerville, four great grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren.
In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Hurst was preceded in death by her son, Warren Hurst, Jr. of Somerville; four sisters, Louise Pulliam, Thelma Kelly, Kate Caldwell, Nellie Cranford; and three brothers, Charles (Buddy) McNabb, Horace (Butch) McNabb and Martin McNabb, all of the Fayette County area.
Those honored to serve as casketbearers were Stephen Burns, Timothy Burns, Bill Newby, Chris Burns, Miles Morris, David Newby and Mark Cooper.
The family requests that memorials be directed to the Somerville First Baptist Church, 12685 S. Main Street, Somerville, TN 38068 or to the charity or organization of the donor’s choice.
