Mary Louise Murphey
1924—2011
Mary Louise Pulliam Murphey, longtime resident of the Somerville Community and wife of James F. Murphey, Jr. died Wednesday afternoon, April 13, 2011 at the National HealthCare Center in Somerville where she had been a resident for eight months. She was 86 years of age and died following an extended illness.
Services of Remembrance for Mrs. Murphey were conducted at 2 P.M. Saturday, April 16
th
at the Somerville First United Methodist Church with Rev. Larry Kendrick of the Church, officiating. Interment followed in the Somerville City Cemetery. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes—Main Chapel of Somerville.
Mrs. Murphey was born in Rossville on September 11, 1924. She was preceded in death by her parents, Opal Louise Fite Pulliam and James Perry Pulliam, Sr. Mrs. Murphey was a graduate of Collierville High School and continued her education at the West Tennessee State Teachers College in Memphis. She was married on April 23, 1945 to James F. Murphey, Jr., retired Fayette County Rural Mail Carrier and United State Veteran, who survives.
Mrs. Murphey was a devoted member of her Church and was a member of the Wesley Sunday School Class and a lifetime member of the United Methodist Women. She retired as Fayette County Budget Director after more than 30 years of service in the Fayette County Government.
In addition to her husband of 65 years, she leaves her daughter: Emily Murphey Akin (Ron) of Union City; her son: James Farley Murphey, III (Patricia) of Ramer;
her sisters: Virginia Boswell (Frank) of Somerville, Jane Lewis (Gene) of Seagoville, TX; her brother: James Perry Pulliam, Jr., (LaVerne) of Oklahoma City, OK
;
her grandsons: Scott Akin (Jennifer) of Monticello, AR; James Farley Murphey, IV, (Amy) of Murfreesboro; Joseph Franklin Murphey (Kerry) of Buford, GA; granddaughter: Molly Akin of Tallahassee, FL; three great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Murphey was preceded in death by her sisters, Barbara Jo McFarland and Priscilla P. Langdon.
Those honored to serve as casketbearers were Molly Akin,
Scott Akin, David Boswell, Jay Murphey, Jody Murphey and Elizabeth Boswell Walker.
