Mary Lill (Thompson) Powers

March 16, 1922 — May 10, 2017

Mary Lill Thompson Powers, age 95, resident of Somerville and wife of the late Rex Powers, Sr., departed this life Wednesday morning, May 10, 2017 at the Methodist LeBonheur Germantown Hospital.

Services of Remembrance for Mrs. Powers were conducted at 3 P.M. Saturday, May 13, 2017 at the Peebles Main Funeral Chapel in Somerville with Bro. David Reeves, pastor of the Midway Baptist Church in Whiteville, officiating. Interment followed in the Somerville City Cemetery. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes & Cremation Center – Main Chapel of Somerville.

Mrs. Powers was born March 16, 1922 in the Laconia Community, the youngest of seven children. She was married November 11, 1938 to Rex Byrn Powers, Sr. and they were the owners of Cooksey’s Clothing Store on the town square in Somerville. She was a lifelong resident of Fayette County and was of the Presbyterian faith. Mrs. Powers enjoyed cooking, gardening, traveling and special times with her family. She will be remembered for her “true southern values” and her special style and fashion.

Mrs. Powers is survived by her daughter, Dartha Lill Parker (Billy) of Somerville, TN; her son, Rex B. Powers, Jr. (Maggie) of Oakland, TN; four grandchildren, Rebecca Lill Parker Arnold (Tony), Ricky Parker (Mandy), Rex Powers, III (Cathy), Randy Powers; nine great-grandchildren; and her special caregivers, Patricia Green, Esther Douglas, Kim Cook and Lizzie Pirtle.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Rex Byrn Powers, Sr. who died May 22, 2004; her parents, Austin S. Thompson and Darthula Brannon Thompson; three sisters, Cinderella Groce, Julia Cowan, Austine Cooksey; and three brothers, Oran Thompson, Andrew Thompson and Brannon Thompson.

Those honored to serve as pallbearers were Ricky Parker, Rex Powers, III, Randy Powers, Logan Powers, Addison Alford and Hunter Powers. Honorary pallbearers included David Fowler, Roy Martin, Jesse Morris and Bill Griggs.

The family requests that memorials be directed to the Fayette County Chapter of the American Cancer Society, c/o Christine Parks, 402 Midland Street, Somerville, TN 38068 or the church, charity or organization of the donor’s choice.
