MARY PEARL SCOTT "PEARLIE" THOMAS, longtime resident of the Somerville and Williston Communities and wife of the late Emmitt Thomas died at 11 A.M. Friday, May 30, 2008 at Bolivar General Hospital where she had been a patient for one day. She was 97 years of age and died following a brief illness.
Funeral services for Mrs. Thomas were conduced at 2 P.M. Monday, June 2nd at Peebles Main Funeral Chapel in Somerville with Rev. Virgil Howell of Middleton officiating. He was assisted by Rev. Bertie Moore of Bolivar. Interment followed in the Evergreen Cemetery at Williston. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Home-Main Chapel of Somerville.
Mrs. Thomas was born November 28, 1910 in the Warren Community of Fayette County, the daughter of the late James Williams Scott and the late Gertrude Howard Scott. She received her education in the Fayette County Public School system and was married September 11, 1928 to James Emmitt Thomas, longtime Fayette County Carpenter and builder before his death on February 10, 1997.
Mrs. Thomas was employed by the Defense Depot and National Fireworks during war periods and was a homemaker throughout her life. She was a resident of the Williston Community for over forty years and resided in Somerville since 1995. She lived her life with dignity, courage and faith and was an inspiration to her family and friends. Mrs. Thomas was a member of the Morris Chapel Baptist Church and she enjoyed fishing, gardening and caring for her grandchildren.
Survivors of Mrs. Thomas include her grandchildren: Frank Hartman (Gail) of Somerville, Wayne Thomas (Maxine) of Middleton, James Porter (Joyce) of Bartlett; her daughter-in-law, Jane Thomas Ridley of Whiteville; two brothers, Samuel Scott of Somerville and John Scott of Saltillo, TN and a host of great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her her daughter, Evelyn Hartman; son, Hulon Thomas and a grandson, Jerry Porter and two infant sons.
Those honored to serve as casketbearers were Thomas Whittemore, Caine Porter, Gary Marbry, Jr., Greg Thomas, Johnny Shields and Tommy McCaskill.
Calvin Howell served as honorary casketbearer.
