Mary Elizabeth Tapp Scott, longtime resident of the Somerville Community and wife of Holt Scott died Wednesday evening, February 25, 2009 at the Methodist University Hospital in Memphis where she had been a patient for two weeks. She was 90 years of age and died following a brief illness.
Funeral Services for Mrs. Scott were conducted at 2 P.M. Saturday, February 28, 2009 at the First United Methodist Church in Somerville with Rev. Larry Kendrick, pastor of the church, officiating. Personal reflections were given by Mrs. Scott's son, Joe Scott. Interment followed in the Somerville City Cemetery. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes & Cremation Center - Main Chapel of Somerville.
Mrs. Scott was born September 5, 1918 in Fayette County, the daughter of the late Joseph N. Tapp and Zera Holt Tapp, early residents of the area. She was educated in the Fayette County Public School System and was a graduate of the Fayette County High School in Somerville, Class of 1936. Mrs. Scott was married September 22, 1945 to Banks Holt Scott, longtime Art Director for Channel Five Television in Memphis and well-known Somerville artist, who survives. Mrs. Scott was a devoted homemaker, wife and mother throughout her life. She was a member of the Somerville First United Methodist Church for many years and an active member of the Ray McGhee Sunday School Class. She was a lifelong resident of Fayette County and will be remembered for her gentle, quiet mannerisms and meticulous appearance. An avid reader and gifted seamstress, Mrs. Scott enjoyed quilting and preparing food for her family.
In addition to her devoted husband of 63 years, Mrs. Scott is survived by her daughter, Zera Scott Akin (Bill) of Jackson, TN; her son, Joseph H. Scott and wife, Jan, of Burnsville, NC; two sisters, Lucille Pattat of Somerville and Olivia Hathaway of Bartlett, TN; two brothers, Bobby Tapp and Franklin Tapp, both of Somerville, TN; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by four brothers, Howell Tapp, Fred Tapp, Richard Tapp and Lewis Tapp and two sisters, Virginia Morris and Mabel Pattat.
Those honored to serve as pallbearers were James Edwin Morris, Holt Tapp, Harold Sims Pattat, Bryant Tapp, Chris Scott and John Scott.
The family requests that memorials be directed to the First United Methodist Church, 202 S. East Street, Somerville, TN 38068.
