Mary Jewel (Mathis) Jowers

February 1, 1928 — October 23, 2013

Mary Jewel Mathis Jowers, longtime resident of the Hickory Withe Community and retired school bus driver departed this life Wednesday morning, October 23, 2013 at the Gallaway Healthcare Center where she resided for six years. She was 85 years of age and died following an extended illness.

Graveside Services for Mrs. Jowers were conducted at 11 A.M. Monday, October 28th with Rev. Frank Starr, Mrs. Jowers son-in-law, officiating. Interment followed in the Memorial Park Cemetery in Memphis. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes and Cremation Center – Main Chapel of Somerville.

Mrs. Jowers was born February 1, 1928 in Poinsett County, Arkansas. She was preceded in death by her parents, William Alfred Roe Mathis and Theoda Lottie Mathis Goff. She received her education in the Tennessee Public School System and was employed as a school bus driver for Fayette County Schools for much of her life.

Mrs. Jowers lived in the Hickory Withe Community for over 40 years and was a member of the Arlington First United Methodist Church. She was avid Elvis Presley fan and loved to listen to music of all types. She will be remembered for the love she expressed to family and friends.

Mrs. Jowers is survived by her daughter, Linda Kay Starr (Frank) of Jackson, TN; two grandchildren, Dustin Robertson (Kristin) of Somerville, Drew Robertson (Jessica) of Atoka; and two great grandchildren, Ashton Robertson and Ainsley Robertson.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Gloria Jean Stewart.

The family requests that memorials be directed to Crossroads Hospice, 1669 Shelby Oaks Dr., Suite 106, Memphis, TN 38134.
