MAX WELDON KOFFMAN, longtime resident of the Somerville Community, retired Environmentalist, U. S. Veteran and husband of Dorothy Koffman died at 9:15 A.M. Friday, May 22, 2009 at the Methodist University Hospital in Memphis where he had been a patient for nine days. He was 82 years of age and died following an extended illness.
Funeral services for Mr. Koffman were conducted at 3 P.M. Sunday, May 24th at the Peebles Main Funeral Chapel in Somerville with Rev. John Michael Krech, Pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in Somerville, officiating. Interment followed in the Somerville City Cemetery. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes-Main Chapel of Somerville.
Mr. Koffman was born December 6, 1926 in Hazel, Kentucky and moved at an early age with his parents to Gibson County Tennessee. He was preceded in death by his parents, Irby Koffman and Maxine Miller Koffman.
He was educated in the Gibson County School System and was a graduate of the Trenton, Tennessee High School. He continued his education at Union University in Jackson where he received his Bachelor's Degree and earned his Master's Degree from the University of Oklahoma.
He was a Veteran of the United States Army and was married September 7, 1946 to the former Dorothy Wood of Trenton, who survives.
Mr. Koffman was an employee of the Tennessee Department of Public Health for twenty-eight years and retired as an Environmentalist for the department.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Somerville and had been a resident of Fayette County since 1951.
In addition to his wife of sixty-two years, Mr. Koffman is survived by his daughter, Lisa Koffman Jones of Memphis; his son Ken Koffman of Nashville and grandson Peter Koffman of Washington, D. C.
Those honored to serve as casket bearers were Jimmy Bowling, Richard Coles, Craig Janis, Patrick Koffman, Peter Koffman and Tom Luck.
