Maxine Sykes Stewart, resident of Memphis with extended family members in the Fayette and Hardeman County areas died Sunday morning, December 16, 2012 at the Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis. She was 90 years of age and died following brief illness.
Services of Remembrance for Mrs. Stewart were conducted at 11 A.M. Saturday, December 22nd at the Peebles West Funeral Chapel at Oakland with Pastor Dennis Callahan of Medina, Tennessee officiating. Interment followed in the Lathams Chapel Cemetery near Medina. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes & Cremation Center — West Chapel at Oakland.
Mrs. Stewart was born June 22, 1922 in Decatur County, Tennessee. She was preceded in death by her parents, William Wesley Sykes and Sally White Sykes. She received her education in the Scotts Hill Public School System and was married February 23, 1941 to James William Stewart, Sr., who preceded her in death.
Mrs. Stewart was a homemaker throughout her life and had been a resident of Memphis for many years. She was a member of the Rushing Creek Baptist Church and will be remembered for her love and devotion to her family and friends. She lived a rich, dedicated and devoted life to her children and grandchildren and is now at home with Jesus and our Heavenly Father.
Mrs. Stewart is survived by three daughters, Janice S. Harrison of Saulsbury, Debra S. Orbacz of Round Hill, VA, Cynthia S. Young of Bolivar; her son, James William Stewart, Jr. of Memphis; two sisters, Edna Wolfarth of Kosciusko, MS, Jimmie Lou Belza of Mayfield, KY; five grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.
Mrs. Stewart was preceded in death by one great grandchild.
Those honored to serve as casketbearers were John Robert Kirk, Andy Young, Daniel Guy, Farris Rollins, Nevile West and Ryan Lax.
Honorary casketbearers were William Guy and Duane Cleveland.
The family requests that memorials be directed to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
