MELBA KATHERINE MORRISON FRENCH, longtime resident of Memphis and mother of Mike French of Somerville
died at 7:45 P.M. Saturday, March 15, 2008 at Methodist Central Hospital in Memphis where she had been a patient for one week. She was 89 years of age and died following an illness of several weeks.
Funeral services for Mrs. French were conducted at 11 A.M. Tuesday March 18th at Whitehaven Baptist Church with Rev. Jim Meredith, pastor of the church officiating. Interment followed in the Forest Hill South Cemetery on Holmes Road. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Home - Main Chapel of Somerville.
A native of Ecru, MS., Mrs. French was born February 12, 1919 the daughter of the late Lanny Alexander Morrison and the late Vinnie Newsom Morrison. She was educated in the Pontotoc County, MS public school system and moved to Memphis after completing high school. She was the wife of late Carlton Vertrees French who died November 30, 2005. In earlier years, during the 1940's Mr. and Mrs. French were residents of Fayette County.
Mrs. French was a homemaker and was also employed as a mail carrier for the United States Postal Service in Shelby County for many years before her retirement twenty years ago.
She was an active member of the Whitehaven Baptist Church for many years. She enjoyed flower gardening as long as health permitted and was involved with the activities of her grandchildren throughout her life.
Mrs. French is survived by her daughter, Ann Morrison French Coker of Corinth, MS, her son Michael Carlton "Mike" of Somerville and 2 grandchildren, Jonathan French Coker of Memphis and Catherine Coleman Coker of Birmingham, AL.
