MELVIN EUGENE "GENE" JACKSON, lifelong resident of Mason, TN, retired long distance truck operator, U.S. Army Veteran and husband of Thelma Watson Jackson, died at 3:25 A.M. Monday, May 5, 2008 at the Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis. He was 59 years of age and died following an extended illness.
Funeral services for Mr. Jackson were conducted at 2 P.M. Thursday, Peebles Main Funeral Chapel in Somerville with Rev. G.K. Ballard of Ripley, TN, officiating. Interment, with military honors, followed in Cedar Hill Cemetery at Mason. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Home - Main Chapel of Somerville.
Mr. Jackson was a native of Tipton County. He was born June 5, 1948, the son of the late Melvin Ellis Jackson and the late Sylvia Evelyn Jackson. He was educated in the Tipton and Shelby County public school system and was of the Christian faith. He was married June 5, 1992 to the former Thelma Watson of Memphis, employee of the Krystal Corporation, who survives.
Mr. Jackson was a long distance trucker in earlier years and was also employed by the Southern Warehouse in Memphis. His interests included hunting, mechanical repairs and special times with his grandchildren and pet dog, "Coco"
In addition to his wife, Mr. Jackson is survived by four daughters, Charlette Jackson of Millington, Lisa Taylor of Belle, Ohio, Tracy Haddakin of Memphis, Paulett Jackson of Mason; four sons, Donnie Carpenter of Springfield, Ohio, Robert Carpenter, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Jerrel Carpenter of Orlando, Florida, Marc Leis of Fountain Inn, SC; three sisters, Mary Moorman of Memphis, Barbara Ann Jones of Covington, Francis Veach of Stanton; his brother, Thomas "Smiley" Jackson of Mason; 19 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
Those honored to serve as casketbearers were Donnie Carpenter, Tracy Taylor, Marc Leis, Charles Watson, Dennis Pepper and Jason Presley.
