Michael Grant Cox, a resident of the Somerville Community and United States Veteran departed this life Monday morning, October 29, 2012 at the St. Francis Hospital in Bartlett where he had been a patient for six days. He was 57 years of age and died following an illness of seven years.
Services of Remembrance for Mr. Cox were conducted at 11 A.M. Friday, November 2nd at the Peebles West Funeral Chapel at Oakland with Bro. Drew Murphy of the Fayette Baptist Church in Oakland officiating. Interment with Military Honors followed in the West Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery at Germantown. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes & Cremation Center — West Chapel at Oakland.
Mr. Cox was born April 11, 1955 in Hughes, Arkansas. He was preceded in death by his parents, John R. Cox and Winnie M. Deaton Cox. He moved at an early age with his family to the Memphis area, receiving his education in the Memphis Public School System and graduating from the Frayser High School. He served in the United States Marine Corps from 1982 until 1984 and was a Baptist.
In earlier years, Mr. Cox was employed as a baker for the Kroger Company and the Tastee Bread Company in Memphis. In later years, he served as an independent contractor for gutter installation and construction projects in the Mid-South area. He was a former resident of Memphis before moving to the Somerville Community three years ago. A lifelong avid baseball fan, Mr. Cox enjoyed all sports and outdoor activities that included hunting and fishing.
Mr. Cox is survived by five sisters, Margaret Ann Cox of Oakland, Elisabeth Rainey (Jessie) of Southaven, MS, Patricia Davis (Gary) of Lebanon, VA, Joe Ann Patterson (Jerry) of Bartlett, Mary Taylor (Gary) of Bartlett; five brothers, John Russell Cox, Jr. of Senatobia, MS, Joe Allen Cox (Jackie) of Lake Cormorant, MS, Roy Lee Cox of Acton, TN, Billy James Cox (Becca) of Cordova, Larry William Cox (Robyn) of Shelbyville, IN; and a large number of nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews, whom he greatly loved and they loved him.
Casketbearers were family members and friends and the family requests that memorials be directed to the Fayette Baptist Church, 13100 Highway 194, Oakland, TN 38060.
