Michael Lawrence “Mike” Smith, resident of the Moscow Community in Fayette County, United States Army Veteran and husband of the late Sheri Lynn Ross Smith died Wednesday morning, January 16, 2013 at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Memphis. He was 62 years of age and died following an extended illness.
Services of Remembrance with Military Honors for Mr. Smith will be conducted at 2 P.M. Wednesday, January 23rd at the Pavilion of West Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery with Rev. Tony Watkins of Williston officiating. Interment will follow in the West Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery near Germantown. Arrangements will be provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes and Cremation Center — Main Chapel of Somerville.
Mr. Smith was born December 14, 1950 in Memphis. He was preceded in death by his parents, Veldon Evans Smith and Sue Nell Garner Smith. He received his education in the Shelby County Public School System and enjoyed playing percussion during his high school years. He proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam Period and was employed at the Army Depot in Memphis in earlier years.
He was married to Sheri Lynn Ross Smith, who preceded him in death 24 years ago. Mr. Smith was a Christian and was a resident of Shelby County before moving to the Moscow Community. His favorite pastimes included fishing, outdoor activities, billiards and visiting the casinos.
Mr. Smith is survived by two brothers, Edward Smith of Moscow, Barry Anthony Smith of Munford; and two nephews, Nicholas Keith Smith of Moscow and Rule Smith of Munford.
The family requests that memorials be directed to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
