Nannie Elizabeth (Cannon) Smith

February 14, 1916 — December 7, 2012

Nannie Elizabeth Cannon Smith, resident of the Somerville Community and wife of the late Rev. Noble Lee Smith died Friday morning, December 7, 2012 at her residence. She was 96 years of age and died following a brief illness. Mrs. Smith was one of the oldest residents of Fayette County and was blessed with over 100 living family members.

Services of Remembrance for Mrs. Smith were conducted at 2 P.M. Sunday, December 9th at the Peebles West Funeral Chapel at Oakland with her son, Rev. Ronald Smith of Cookeville, TN officiating. He was assisted by her minister, Rev. Rodney Van Winkle of the Faith Church of God in Somerville. Interment followed in the Forest Hill East Cemetery on Whitten Road in Memphis. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes & Cremation Center — West Chapel at Oakland.

Mrs. Smith was born February 14, 1916 in Fayette County. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lee Cannon and Minnie Phillips Cannon, early residents of the District 15 Community in Fayette County. She received her education in the Fayette County Public School System and was a devoted homemaker, wife and mother throughout her life. Mrs. Smith was blessed with longivity and outlived four husbands.

She was married August 12, 1973 to Rev. Noble Lee Smith, a Church of God Minister, who preceded her in death on March 15, 2010. During her husband’s ministry, she lived in various locations that included Coldwater, Mississippi and Memphis and after retirement returned to Fayette County, where she had been a resident for the past 28 years. She was a member of the Faith Church of God in Somerville at the time of her death.

Mrs. Smith’s interests included sewing, gardening, flowers and quilting. She enjoyed telling stories of past years and looked forward to special times and holidays with her family. She remained active in her church and community until a recent illness and was known as a person who loved all that she came in contact with.

Mrs. Smith is survived by five daughters, Loraine King (Morris), Louise Pittman, Ruby Ferge, Alvie Cannon and Voydie Cannon, all of Somerville; five sons, Ronald Smith (Donna) of Cookeville, TN, Richard Smith (Kathy) of Memphis, Stephen Smith (Rosalinda) of Bartlett, S.T. Thompson of Henderson, TN, Clifton Thompson of Somerville; 14 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren, 42 great great grandchildren and 3 great great great grandchildren.

Those honored to serve as casketbearers were Brandon King, J.J. Smith, Patrick King, Blake King, Larry Cannon and Jerry Adair.
Honorary casketbearers were Keith Bomar, Johnny Thompson and James King.
