Nell Juanita (Rogers) Atkeison

August 12, 1929 — March 13, 2018

Somerville, Tennessee

Nell Juanita Rogers Atkeison, age 88, resident of Somerville, Tennessee and wife of the late Herbert Atkeison, departed this life Tuesday evening, March 13, 2018 at the Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis.   

Services of Remembrance for Mrs. Atkeison were conducted at 2 P.M. Sunday, March 18, 2018 at the First Baptist Church of Somerville with Bro. Stan Smith, pastor of the church, officiating. Personal remarks were given by Mike Atkeison. Special music was directed by Dr. Stephen White and provided by Phillip McKibben, The New Gospel Heralds, Kim Cook, Cindy Cocke and Barbara Canady. Interment followed in the Somerville City Cemetery. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes & Cremation Center – West Chapel at Oakland.   

Mrs. Atkeison was born August 12, 1929 in Mason, Tennessee. She was a graduate of Fayette County High School Class of 1947 and was married August 12, 1948 to Herbert Atkeison. Growing up on a farm, Mrs. Atkeison enjoyed animals, vegetable and flower gardening, cooking and canning for her family. She was a talented seamstress and enjoyed crocheting gifts for her family. Mrs. Atkeison was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Somerville and served as a member of the choir for 55 years. She enjoyed singing and traveling with the Royal Heirs Senior Choir.   

Mrs. Atkeison leaves to cherish her memory three daughters, Nita Davis of Mountain Home, AR, Ellen DeFoor (Carlton) of Somerville, TN, Nancy Cherry (Johnny) of Friendship, TN; two sons, Nathan Atkeison (Bettye) of Moscow, TN, James “Red” Atkeison (Angela) of Billings, MT; twelve grandchildren, Peter Atkeison (Jennifer), Emily Atkeison, Ken Harris (Tasha), Katie Stollings (Ryan), Ginnie Myers (Jeff), Amy DeFoor, Joseph DeFoor (Ashlee), Kristalea Fincher (Adam), Jenna Cherry, Sarah Kathryn Cherry, Drew Atkeison, Paige Atkeison; and ten great-grandchildren, Maxx Atkeison, Satchel Harris, Dodge Harris, McGhee Harris, Harris Stollings, Sloane Stollings, Cami Crawford, Jac Crawford, Preston Myers and Peyton Myers. She also leaves an extended family of nieces, nephews, cousins and her caregiver, Pat Moffett.   

She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Atkeison; her parents, Bennie Willis Rogers and Anna Muriel Eubanks Rogers; her daughter, Amy Marie Atkeison; four sisters, Elizabeth Rogers Taylor, Kathryn Rogers Petty, Anna Margaret Rogers Rike, Frances Rogers Clifton; and three brothers, Robert Rogers, Paul Woodrow Rogers and Ray Rogers.   

Those honored to serve as pallbearers were Peter Atkeison, Mike Atkeison, Johnny Cherry, Amy DeFoor, Carlton DeFoor, Joseph DeFoor, Ken Harris and Jeff Myers. Honorary pallbearers were Ed Atkeison, Roger Cowan, Terry Redfearn, Jerry Redfearn, Ellis White, Greg Tapp, First Baptist Church of Somerville choir members and Mrs. Atkeison's Sunday School class at First Baptist Church of Somerville.   

The family requests that memorials be directed to the First Baptist Church of Somerville Music Program, 12685 S. Main Street, Somerville, TN 38068.
