Nellie Martin

Nellie Ruth Newman Martin resident of the Oakland Community and wife of Willie C. Martin died peacefully at her residence on Thursday morning, February 24, 2011.
She was 92 years of age and died following an extended illness.
Funeral services for Mrs. Martin were conducted at
3 PM Sunday, February 28
th
at the Peebles West Funeral Chapel at Oakland
with Rev. Carl Meyer and Rev. Carl Doyle of the First Baptist Church in Oakland, officiating.
Interment followed in the Fayette County Memorial Park Cemetery on Highway 64. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes—West Chapel of Oakland.
Mrs. Martin was an Alabama native born on March 6, 1918. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lillie Gill Newman and R. B. Newman. Mrs. Martin was educated in the Hamilton, MS School System and graduated from the Fritz Cosmetology Beauty School in Jackson, MS in 1960. She was married July 5, 1942 to Willie C. Martin, retired Long Distance Truck Operator for Gordon’s Transport Company, who survives.
Mrs. Martin was a former resident of Ridgeland, MS where she owned and operated her Beauty Shop. She and her family later moved to the Memphis area where she was employed in the Millinery Department of Goldsmiths Department Store in Whitehaven before her retirement.
A devoted member of the Oakland First Baptist Church, Mrs. Martin will be remembered as a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who enjoyed special times with her family. She was an accomplished seamstress and camping with her family was a favorite pastime. Mr. and Mrs. Martin were residents of Fayette County for the past 17 years.
In addition to her husband of 68 years, Mrs. Martin leaves her children: Sandra K. Wade (Tom) of Oakland, Willie C. Martin, Jr. (Margaret), of Casar, NC, Newman Gary Martin (Cheryl) of Piney Flats, TN, her brothers: Russell Newman and J.C. Newman, both of Aberdeen, MS; 7 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Those honored to serve as casketbearers were Russell King, Jeremy Martin, Tim Martin, Ken Matthias, Cory Wade and Andrew Williams.
