Nellie Powell
1907—2010
Nellie King Powell, a resident of Cordova and retired School Teacher with numerous friends in Fayette County died Thursday, August 26, 2010 at the Memphis Jewish Retirement Home in Cordova. She was 103 years of age and died following an illness of several months. Mrs. Powell continued to visit in Fayette County until her illness last year.
A Service of Remembrance for Mrs. Powell was conducted at 10:30 A.M. Monday, August 30

at the Union Avenue Baptist Church where she had been a member for 90 years. The officiating ministers were Dr. Travis Fleming and Rev. Jeff Williamson. A visitation for Mrs. Powell followed the services and interment will be at a later date. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes—Main Chapel of Somerville.
Mrs. Powell was born on Blue Island, Illinois on March 24, 1907 to the late W. O. King and the late Grace Harriss King. She was the wife of the late John R. Powell.
Mrs. Powell
joined the Union Avenue Baptist Church in 1920 and for many years served as a leader in the Sunday School Department and in the Women’s Missionary Organization of the church. She was a former regional tennis champion and continued to play regularly until the age of 96. A member of the Memphis Old Time Car Club, Mrs. Powell enjoyed traveling in her antique cars and the association of her many friends. She continued to own her antique Oldsmobile sedan which she purchased new in 1941.
Mrs. Powell is survived by her son, John R. Powell of Cordova and the
family requests that memorials be directed to Union Avenue Baptist Church, 2181 Union Avenue, Memphis, TN 38104.
