NONIE MAE PARKER KIRKLAND, longtime resident of the Whiteville Community and wife of the late Raymond Eugene Kirkland, Sr., died at 12:19 A.M. Thursday, June 11, 2009 at the Regional Hospital of Jackson where she was taken after becoming suddenly ill at her residence. She was 81 years of age and died following a brief illness.
Funeral services for Mrs. Kirkland were conducted at 2 P.M. Saturday, June 13th at the Mt. Moriah Baptist Church near Whiteville with Rev. Don Hammons, Baptist Minister, officiating. Interment followed in the Mt. Moriah Cemetery. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes-Main Chapel of Somerville.
A native of Whiteville, Mrs. Kirkland was born one of six children to Robert Boyd Parker, Sr. and Nettie Sue Williams Parker, on April 8, 1928.
She received her education in the Whiteville School System and later married her husband, Raymond Eugene Kirkland in 1960. Mr. Kirkland, an Electrician and Korean Army Veteran, preceded her in death on September 19, 1979.
Mrs. Kirkland was a longtime resident of the Whiteville Community, devoted housewife, mother and caretaker to many. In earlier years she was employed by Morris Grocery in Whiteville.
A faithful member of the Mt. Moriah Baptist Church, her family and Christian values were an inspiration to all who knew her.
An avid basketball fan, she had a special love for animals and her pet dog, "Chloe".
Survivors of Mrs. Kirkland include three sons: James Kirkland (Linda) of Toone, TN; Rogers Kirkland and Raymond Kirkland, Jr., both of Whiteville; her sister, Eunice Swanson of Litchfield, IL; brother, Robert Boyd Parker, Jr. of Somerville; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Elizabeth Cook and Bobbie Jean White and one brother, Joseph William Parker.
Those honored to serve as casket bearers were Rob Cryer, Tony Cryer, Rowe Hughes, Ronnie Marbury, Rob Pinner and Everett Woods.
Honorary casket bearers were Randal Campbell, Fred Griffith, Anthony Kirkland, John Kirkland, Carey Lynn Rogers, L. A. Rogers and Winston Rogers.
