Norris Gray Tatum Wirt
April 29, 1909 — February 5, 2008
Norris Gray Tatum Wirt, a resident of Holcomb, MS and a former long time resident of the Somerville community died at 7 P.M. Tuesday, February 5, 2008 at the Grace Health and Rehabilation Center in Grenada, MS.
She was 98 years of age and remained active until her recent illness.
Funeral services for Mrs. Wirt were conducted at 11 A.M. Thursday,
February 7th at the Graveside with her nephew Rev. Gary Tatum of Lexington, AL officiating. Interment was in the Somerville City Cemetery.
Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Home-Main Chapel of Somerville.
A native of Tallahatchie, MS, Mrs. Wirt was born April 29, 1909. She was educated in the Mississippi Public School System and was married in 1938 to Mr. Joseph Henry Wirt, a member of an early Fayette County family. longtime resident of Somerville and retired merchant who died August 16, 1973.
Mrs. Wirt will be remembered for her colorful personality and her involvement in the business and religious activities of the community. She was a member for many years of the Somerville Presbyterian Church and was associated with her family in their real estate and property developments in the downtown Somerville area.
Her quick wit and keen sense of humor remained with her throughout her life. Mrs. Wirt was an avid conversationalist and found much enjoyment
in helping others in their time of need. She was a strong supporter of the Somerville Cemetery Association and of her church and other churches located in Mississippi. She touched many lives, making a difference for her own family as well as others who considered her a second mother.
Mrs. Wirt remained in Somerville until moving to Mississippi in 1997 to be near a nephew, Carl Little and wife Kathy, who were her caregivers in recent years. She lived simply, peacefully, and in harmony with all nature and her fellow man for almost ten decades.
Mrs. Wirt is survived by her nieces and nephews and the family request that memorials be directed to the Somerville Presbyterian Church, 12940 South Main Street, Somerville, TN 38068
