Novalyn (Lancaster) Butler

April 7, 1926 — October 25, 2011

Novalyn Lancaster Butler, resident of Memphis, native of Somerville and wife of the late Olin Bryce Butler died Tuesday, October 25, 2011 at the St. Francis Hospital on Park Avenue in Memphis where she had been a patient for nine days. She was 90 years of age and died following an extended illness.

Services of Remembrance for Mrs. Butler were conducted at 2 P.M. Saturday, October 29th at Peebles Main Funeral Chapel in Somerville with Pastor James Quillen of Highland Heights Presbyterian Church in Memphis, officiating. Interment followed in the Rehobeth Cemetery near Somerville. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes and Cremation Center — Main Chapel of Somerville.

Mrs. Butler was born April 7, 1926 in Somerville. She was preceded in death by her parents, Leon Lancaster and Evie Roberts Lancaster. She received her education in the Fayette County Public School System and was a graduate of Fayette County High School Class of 1943. Mrs. Butler was married in 1944 to Olin Bryce Butler, who preceded her in death. She was a resident of Memphis for much of her adult life and served as an accountant and bookkeeper for the R.E. Shook Plumbing Company in Memphis for 35 years before her retirement. She was a devoted member of the Highland Heights Presbyterian Church in Memphis and was a lifelong resident of Shelby and Fayette Counties.

Mrs. Butler and many other residents of the area supported the World War II Campaign by riveting wings on the United States Bomber and Fighter airplanes. Her interests included traveling and reading with a special love for family times.

Mrs. Butler is survived by her son, Michael E. Butler (Hazel) of Lakeland; her sister, Judy Green of Somerville; four grandchildren, Michelle Himes of Madison County, TN, Gwynne Hagan of Germantown, Dr. Christopher Somogyi of Germantown, Rich Somogyi of Collierville; and eight great grandchildren.

Those honored to serve as pallbearers were Jim Hagan, Dr. Christopher Somogyi, Rich Somogyi, Eric Knight, Rob Lancaster and Barry Himes.

The family requests that memorials be directed to the Shelby County Chapter of the American Heart Association, 2170 Business Center Drive, Suite 1, Memphis, TN 38134.
