Oliver Douglas Pleasants

October 5, 1946 — March 21, 2013

Oliver Pleasants, 66, passed away March 21, 2013 after an extended illness. He was a lifelong member of the Fayette County community. Mr. Pleasants was born October 5, 1946 to M. Everett and Hazel Pleasants in the Kirk Community.

One of 10 children, Oliver grew up the son of a farmer learning early on the meaning of hard work and the importance of family. He graduated from Collierville High School in 1964, where he met his future wife, Martha Pruitt with whom he had three children. Oliver was born with a green thumb. Throughout his life he was an avid gardener and took pride in growing some of the most beautiful flowers in the county. He loved to fish and spent many a summer afternoon fishing with his three children.

Oliver was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ. In his early years he attended International Bible College in Florence, Alabama. He was an associate minister at Mt. Zion Church of Christ in Florence Alabama during the early 70’s. In addition, Oliver was a QC Manager at Sewell Plastics and a Manager of the Garden Department at Wal-Mart from which he retired. He served in the National Guard for 12 years.

He enjoyed golfing with his brother-in-law and loved country music. He adored Dolly Parton and believed she was the greatest country music singer of all time…. second only to Patsy Cline. Oliver loved good ole southern cooking and was an excellent cook of southern cuisine. Although he loved many things, he experienced the greatest joy from his grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his mother and father and two brothers Wilber and Clyde Pleasants. He is survived by wife Martha Pleasants, two sisters: Melissa Kelley (Mike) and Bernice Roberts (Myral), and five brothers: Miles Pleasants Jr., Jerry Pleasants (Janice), Sammy Pleasants (Tannis), Sydney Pleasants (Teresa) and Ronnie Pleasants (Melissa). He is also survived by two daughters:  Lora Pleasants and Jennifer Pleasants-DeShazo (Eddy) and a son Brian Pleasants. Six grandchildren: Skylar Oglesby, Breeana  DeShazo, McKenzie DeShazo, Emily Baptista, David DeShazo  and Jesse DeShazo; and three great grandchildren.

Services for Mr. Pleasants were conducted at 2 P.M. Saturday, March 23, 2013 at the Somerville Church of Christ with Pastor Larry Prince, pastor of the Tate Road Church of Christ in Jackson, Tennessee officiating. Interment followed in the Pleasants Cemetery in the Rossville Community. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes & Cremation Center – West Chapel at Oakland.
