Oliver "Barney" Junior Barnett

April 26, 1926 — July 15, 2014

Oliver Junior "Barney" Barnett, resident of the Oakland Community, United States Navy Veteran and husband of the late Virginia Juanita Bain Barnett, departed this life Tuesday evening, July 15, 2014 at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Memphis where he had been a patient since May 29, 2014. He was 88 years of age and died following an extended illness.

Services for Mr. Barnett were conducted at 11:30 A.M. Saturday, July 19th at the Bethany Christian Church in Eads with Elder Charles Wiggins officiating. Personal remarks were given by a grandson, Jason Bryan and a granddaughter, Vickie Bragorgos. A Pastoral Prayer was given by Bro. Billy Williams. Special music was provided by a granddaughter, Aubrey Bryan, and Becky Russell. Interment with Military Honors followed in the Bethany Cemetery at Eads. TAPS was played by Hunter Keough at the Graveside. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes & Cremation Center - West Chapel at Oakland.

Mr. Barnett was born April 26, 1926 in Sycamore, Alabama. He was preceded in death by his parents, Loumas Oliver Barnett and Jeffie Mae Frye Barnett. He received his education in the Talladega, Alabama Public School System and served in the United States Navy during the World War II Period as a young person.

Mr. Barnett was married October 4, 1946 to the former Virginia Juanita Bain, who preceded him in death on January 14, 2005. He was employed as a mechanic for area automobile shops for over 25 years before his retirement. He resided in the Oakland Community for the past ten years. Mr. Barnett enjoyed outdoor activities that included swimming, going to the ocean and working on the golf course in Port St. Joe, Florida.

Mr. Barnett is survived by two daughters, Jenny Bryan (Gary) of Collierville, Pat Williams (Billy) of Talladega, AL; two sisters, Kitty Adams of Weogufka, AL, Jean Jones of Port St. Joe, FL; five grandchildren, Victoria Bragorgos, Leslie Bryan, Amy Williams, Jason Bryan, Matt Williams; and eight great grandchildren, Tyler Akins, Aubrey Bryan, Devin Robbins, Sarah Williams, Dawson Bryan, Mason Bragorgos, Ainsley Bryan and Corbin Williams.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Sally Aaron and Mary Nobles.

Those honored to serve as casketbearers were Jason Bryan, Gary Bryan, Tyler Akins, Billy Williams, David Bragorgos, Bo Rutledge and Michael Greenwood.

Honorary casketbearers were Matt Williams, Devin Robbins, Dawson Bryan and Mason Bragorgos.
