OLTON LEE "SHORTY" FEATHERS, resident of the Moscow Community, United States Veteran, retired Equipment Company Employee and husband of Sally Glover Feathers died at 7:57 P.M., Monday, June 15, 2009 at his home on Third Avenue. He was 81 years of age and died following an extended illness of several months.
Funeral services for Mr. Feathers were conducted at 11 A.M. Thursday, June 18th at the Peebles West Funeral Chapel at Oakland with Rev. Frank Feathers of Holly Springs, officiating. He was assisted by Rev. Greg Cook, Pastor of the Morris Memorial Baptist Church at Moscow. Interment with Military Honors followed in the Fayette County Memorial Park Cemetery on Highway 64. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes-West Chapel of Oakland.
Mr. Feathers was born June 2, 1928 in the Moscow Community, and was preceded in death by his parents; Leonard Feathers and Lucy Virginia Rhea Feathers. He was educated in the Slayden, Mississippi Public School System and was married September 1, 1951 to Lelia "Sally" Glover Feathers, retired employee of Kirby Pines Retirement Center in Memphis, who survives.
Mr. Feathers was a United States Veteran serving in both the Army and Air Force.
He was involved in mechanics throughout his life and was employed for a number of years by the Memphis Equipment Company before his retirement.
He was of the Baptist faith and was a resident of Memphis for much of his life before returning to the Moscow Community to reside two years ago.
He enjoyed drag racing activities and was the owner in past years of a drag racing vehicle.
Known for his frankness and independent nature, Mr. Feathers received pleasure in serving as a spectator during the time that his daughters played softball.
In addition to his wife of fifty-seven years, Mr. Feathers is survived by five daughters: Ann Smith (Charles) of the Williston Community and Jackie James (Henry), Pamela Johns (Michael), Karen Feathers and Teresa Holloway (Earl), all of Moscow; three brothers: Herbert Wade Feathers and Lawrence Feathers, both of Olive Branch, MS and Darnell Feathers of Southaven; eleven grandchildren and twenty great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one grandson, Kevin Smith; two brothers and one sister.
Those honored to serve as casket bearers were Dwayne Smith, Brian Smith, Jeremy James, Kevin Smith (posthumously), Michael Sowell and Earl Holloway, III.
"Bubba" Feathers and Ricky Feathers served as honorary casket bearers.
The family requests that memorials be directed to the church, charity or organization of the donor's choice.
