Opal Mae Campbell Jenkins, longtime resident of the Oakland Community and wife of Eugene “Gene” Jenkins departed this life Monday morning, February 11, 2013 at the St. Francis Hospital in Bartlett where she had been a patient for one day. She was 79 years of age and died following a brief illness.
Services of Remembrance for Mrs. Jenkins were conducted at 10 A.M. Thursday, February 14th at the Peebles West Funeral Chapel at Oakland with Minister Don Green of the East Memphis Church of Christ officiating. Reflections and personal remarks were given by Jerry Spice, Terry Riley and Jacob Jenkins. Interment followed in the Fayette County Memorial Park Cemetery on Highway 64. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes & Cremation Center — West Chapel at Oakland.
Mrs. Jenkins was born April 17, 1933 in the Braden Community. She was preceded in death by her parents, Albert Campbell and Lillie Stafford Campbell, early residents of the Braden area. She received her education in the Fayette County Public School System and was a graduate of Fayette County High School in Somerville. She was married January 10, 1955 to Calvin Eugene “Gene” Jenkins, retired farmer and landowner in the Oakland area, who survives.
Mrs. Jenkins was a longtime member of the Church of Christ and had been a resident of Wirt Road near Oakland for the past 58 years. She was a homemaker throughout her life and also received pleasure in her employment on a part-time basis at the Anderson General Mercantile in the Lambert Community. Mrs. Jenkins will be remembered as an avid lover of flowers and gardening. She was a collector of anything that could be restored or repaired and found beauty in items that other people discarded. Hosting family events were special times for her and devotion to her family and friends had been a priority throughout her life.
In addition to her husband of 58 years, Mrs. Jenkins is survived by her daughter, Carol Mitchell (Mike) of Oakland; two sons, Ray Jenkins (Sherry) of Oakland, Charles Jenkins of Oakland; six grandchildren and six great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Anita Hampton, who died in 1991.
Those honored to serve as casketbearers were Jason Hampton, Jacob Jenkins, Clayton Canady, Jody Ferrell, Daniel Watkins and Josh Campbell.
Honorary casketbearers were Ricky Jenkins and Kenneth Jenkins.
The family requests that memorials be directed to any Fayette County church, charity or organization of the donor’s choice.
