Patricia "Pat" Chadwick Lamar, age 71, resident of Oxford, a person active for many years in the community and civic affairs of Oxford, retired teacher and wife of Dr. Wayne Terry Lamar departed this life September 24, 2012 at the Baptist Memorial Hospital in Oxford.
Services Honoring the Life of Mrs. Lamar were conducted at 3 P.M. Friday, September 28th at the Oxford University Methodist Church, where she was a devoted member, with interment in the Oxford Memorial Park Cemetery. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes and Cremation Center – Main Chapel of Somerville, TN.
Mrs. Lamar was born April 3, 1941 in Jackson, MS. She was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. Vernon Davis Chadwick and Glenn Hines Chadwick. She was educated in the Jackson, MS School System and received her BAE from the University of Mississippi, where she served as Ole Miss Beauty, cheerleader and Homecoming Queen. Mrs. Lamar was married June 9, 1962 to Dr. Wayne Terry Lamar, retired Orthopedic Surgeon and former Ole Miss Sports Physician, who survives.
Mrs. Lamar served as Oxford’s first female mayor from 1997 to 2001 after having been the city's first female alderman for eight years. Some of her accomplishments included the completion of the Oxford Conference & Readiness Center, the Pat Lamar Park and the revival and beautification of downtown Oxford. She was the recipient of numerous awards and honors that included the School of Education Alumna of the Year, the National Kappa Delta Sorority 2002 Order of the Pearl, Ole Miss Women’s Council Board for Philanthropy, Board Member of the Oxford Chamber of Commerce and President of the Oxford Garden Club. Her greatest enjoyments in life were her family, friends and serving her community.
In addition to her husband of 50 years, Mrs. Lamar is survived by her daughter, Leslie Lamar Mallory of Memphis; two sons, William Chadwick Lamar of Oxford, Lucius Mallory Lamar of Santa Barbara, CA; two sisters, Annie Chadwick Hardin of New York City, Dorothy Chadwick of Madison, MS; her brother, Dr. Vernon Chadwick of Oxford; and seven grandchildren, Robert Ellis Mallory, Jr., Lucius Lamar Mallory, William Thomas Lamar Mallory, Mary Etta Mallory Bridges Lamar, William Chadwick Lamar, Jr., Thomas Giles Lamar and Elizabeth Merrill Lamar.
