Patricia Louise “Patty” Cunningham Gist, resident of the Somerville Community and wife of James E. “Sonny” Gist, Jr. died Monday morning, January 9, 2012 at her residence. She was 50 years of age and died following an extended illness of several years.
Services of Remembrance for Mrs. Gist were conducted at 2 P.M. Thursday, January 12th at the Peebles West Funeral Chapel at Oakland with Rev. John Ed Watkins of the Morris Chapel Baptist Church in Somerville officiating. Special remarks were provided by Tom Davis, Caris Hospice Chaplain and special music was rendered by Tiffany Watkins. Interment followed in the Evergreen Cemetery near Williston. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes and Cremation Center — West Chapel of Oakland.
Mrs. Gist was born January 21, 1961 in Knoxville, TN. She was preceded in death by her parents, William Adam Cunningham and Dorothy Faye Whitson Cunningham. She moved at an early age to Fayette County and was a graduate of the Fayette Ware High School in Somerville. She had been a resident of Fayette County for the past 36 years and was married February 26, 1976 to James E. “Sonny” Gist, Jr., retired tool and dye maker for Troxel Manufacturing Company in Moscow, who survives.
Mrs. Gist was a devoted member of Morris Chapel Baptist Church in Somerville where she had served as a teacher in the children’s church of Morris Chapel. Her passion was working with children and being a role model for her church family. She endeared herself to many with her Christian spirit and attitude during her lengthy illness. She enjoyed reading and caring for her pet dogs, ShyAnn and Fancy.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Gist is survived by two sons, James Brian Gist (Krystal) of Somerville, Joshua Adam Gist (Kimberly) of Somerville; her sister, Linda Grable (Eulas) of Knoxville; her brother, William Cunningham (Donna) of Knoxville; and three granddaughters, Megan Gist, Isabella Gist and Lillian Gist.
Those honored to serve as casketbearers were Andy Grable, Eulas Grable, Chuck McNew, Aaron Prouse, Dustin Prouse, Jason Watkins, Caleb Ellis and Jason Ellis.
The family requests that memorials be directed to the Morris Chapel Baptist Church Children’s Program, 475 Feathers Chapel Drive, Somerville, TN 38068.
