Paul Linzy Byars

April 11, 1936 — July 15, 2017

Paul Linzy Byars, age 81, resident of Somerville and husband of Charlene Byars, departed this life Saturday morning, July 15, 2017 at his residence.

Services of Remembrance for Mr. Byars were conducted at 3 P.M. Wednesday, July 19, 2017 at the Peebles West Funeral Chapel at Oakland with Reverend Scott Heath, Mr. Byars’ son-in-law, officiating. Special music was provided by Dr. Steven White. Interment with Military Honors followed in the Somerville City Cemetery. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes & Cremation Center – West Chapel at Oakland.

Mr. Byars was born April 11, 1936 in Stanton, Tennessee. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Irvon Byars and May Bell Morris Byars. He was a graduate of Haywood County High School, Class of 1954 and served his country in the United States Navy during the Korean War Period for four years. He was married January 29, 1966 to the former Charlene Campbell.

Mr. Byars was a farmer throughout his life and will be remembered for starting his hog farm from nothing and building it into one of the largest hog operations in the Mid-South. He was a hard worker who also served on several boards for various organizations throughout his farming career and was one of the first farmers to use no till farming. He enjoyed supporting his children and the activities they were involved in.  Mr. Byars was a lifelong resident of the Haywood and Fayette County areas. He enjoyed snow skiing, boating, teaching people to water ski, riding in horse shows, classic country and western music and movies, fishing, but most importantly, special times with his grandchildren.

Mr. Byars is survived by his wife of 51 years, Charlene Campbell Byars of Somerville, TN; his daughter, Paula Byars Heath (Scott) of Birmingham, AL; his son, Mark Linzy Byars (Leigh Ellyn) of Tuscaloosa, AL; two sisters, Joan Reeves (Royce) of Somerville, TN, Shirley Cook of Montgomery, AL; and seven grandchildren, Davis Byars, Riley Byars, Covey Byars, Linley Byars, Elijah Heath, Gabe Heath and Ben Heath.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Charles M. Byars (Linda).

Those honored to serve as pallbearers were Royce Reeves, Ken Reeves, Steve Reeves, Davis Byars, Riley Byars, Covey Byars, Elijah Heath, Andy Byars, and Robert Campbell. Honorary pallbearers were Henry Boyd, Bill Kelley, Chuck Byars, Gabe Heath, Ben Heath, Darryl Butler, and Charles Campbell.

The family requests that memorials be directed to First Baptist Church of Somerville, 12685 S. Main Street, Somerville, TN 38068.
