Paul Woodrow Rogers

January 24, 1919 — September 8, 2013

Paul Woodrow Rogers, longtime resident of the Mason Community, well-known retired farmer, United States Army Veteran and wife of the late Mary Tapp Rogers departed this life Sunday morning, September 8, 2013 at the St. Francis Hospital in Bartlett. He was 94 years of age and died following a brief illness.

Services of Remembrance with Military Honors for Mr. Rogers were conducted at 10 A.M. Wednesday, September 11th at the Somerville First United Methodist Church with Dr. Joe Piercey of Memphis and Rev. H.B. Fields of the Methodist Lafferty Circuit officiating. Personal remarks and reflections were given by Mr. Rogers’ granddaughter, Paige Campbell and friends, Dr. Dan Cofie, Cathey Dandridge and Tom Day. Special music was provided by Ellen DeFoor, vocalist, Peggy Tapp, organist and Barbara Canady, pianist. Interment followed in the Belmont Cemetery in the Belmont Community. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes and Cremation Center — Main Chapel of Somerville.

Mr. Rogers was born January 24, 1919 in Fayette County. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ben Willis Rogers and Anna Muriel Eubanks Rogers, early residents of the Mason area. He received his education in the Fayette County Public School System and served his country in the United States Army from 1940 until 1945 during the World War II Period. He was married February 6, 1943 to the former Mary Emily Tapp, a bookkeeper for Fayette Academy before her retirement. Mrs. Rogers preceded Mr. Rogers in death on May 15, 2002.

Mr. Rogers was a farmer for much of his life before his retirement in 1986. He was an avid gardener for 27 years and was a familiar figure at the local farmer's markets where he enjoyed selling his produce to his many friends. Mr. Rogers was a patriotic person and involved in numerous local organizations including the local chapter of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He will be remembered as a people person who was a devoted member for many years of the Oak Grove United Methodist Church where he participated in numerous church activities.

Mr. Rogers is survived by his daughter, Barbara Rogers Canady (Clay) of Oakland; his son, Paul W. Rogers, Jr. of Oakland; his sister, Nell Rogers Atkeison of Somerville; his granddaughter, Paige E. Campbell of Oakland; and three step grandchildren, Clayton Canady, Erin Canady and Brittany Watkins.

Those honored to serve as pallbearers were Bill Taylor, Royce Petty, Charles Petty, Ridley Clifton, Willis Clifton, Nathan Atkeison, Harris Brady and Tommy Edwards. Honorary pallbearers were members of the members of the local chapter of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
