Velma Pauline Bishop Stainback, longtime resident of the Somerville Community, retired dry goods clerk and wife of the late Jodie Stainback departed this life Tuesday morning, October 22, 2013 at her residence. She was 94 years of age and died following an extended illness.
Services for Mrs. Stainback were conducted at 2 P.M. Wednesday, October 23rd at the Peebles Main Funeral Chapel in Somerville with Bro. Don Hammons and Bro. David Reeves officiating. Interment followed in the Mt. Olive Cemetery in the District 15 Community. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes and Cremation Center – Main Chapel of Somerville.
Mrs. Stainback was born April 4, 1919 in Somerville. She was preceded in death by her parents, Homer Bishop and Ressie Rogers Bishop. She received her education in the Fayette County Public School System and was the wife of Jodie Stainback, who preceded her in death in February 1987.
Mrs. Stainback was a resident of the Somerville Community for much of her life and was a member of the Mt. Olive Baptist Church. She was employed as a clerk for many local dry good stores which included Whitehurst, Cohn’s Dry Goods and Minor’s Department Store. She also served as a cook for Pulliam Stop & Shop and was employed at the Silver Moon Café in Somerville. Mrs. Stainback enjoyed gardening, flowers and working with her chickens. Special times with her grandchildren were an important part of her life.
Mrs. Stainback is survived by her daughter, Novalyn Pulliam (David) of Somerville; three sisters, Euphrey Lee Stainback of Memphis, Ruby Parks of Somerville, Peggy Bishop of Somerville; her brother, Johnny Bishop of Somerville; two grandchildren, Sherri Lynn Pulliam, Michael Bradley "Brad" Pulliam; five great grandchildren, Jodie Lynn Gatlin, Denton Pulliam, Angela Gatlin, Britany Pulliam, Hailey Hines; and four great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Lila Mae Parks and three brothers, Son Bishop, Alfred Bishop and Billy Bishop.
Those honored to serve as casketbearers were Brad Pulliam, Denton Pulliam, Thomas Taylor, Jason Lawson, Reuben Kennon and John Oliver, Jr.
The family requests that memorials be directed to the Mt. Olive Baptist Church, 10065 Jernigan Drive, Somerville, TN 38068.
