Peggy Sue (Rice) Masters

December 8, 1930 — May 23, 2014

Peggy Sue Rice Masters, resident of the Oakland Community and wife of Thomas Masters, departed this life Friday evening, May 23, 2014 at the Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis where she had been a patient for 15 days. She was 83 years of age.

Services of Remembrance for Mrs. Masters were conducted at 3 P.M. Tuesday, May 27th at the Peebles West Funeral Chapel at Oakland with Timothy “Tim” Roland, pastor of the Ellendale Church of Christ in Bartlett, officiating. Special music was provided by Mike O’Guinn, soloist. Interment followed in the Fayette County Memorial Park Cemetery on Highway 64. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes & Cremation Center — West Chapel at Oakland.

Mrs. Masters was born December 8, 1930 in Springfield, Tennessee. She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas Garnett Rice and Sally Modine Wilson Rice. She received her education in the Springfield, Tennessee Public School System and was married December 24, 1951 to Thomas Masters, who survives.

Mrs. Masters was a longtime Baptist and retained her membership in the First Baptist Church of Springfield, Tennessee. She was a homemaker for much of her life and was a former resident of Hixson, Tennessee. She had been a resident of the Oakland Community for the past eight years. She was devoted to her family and enjoyed quality time with family and friends. Fishing, growing flowers and outdoor activities were her pleasures and she had fond memories of teaching her grandson, Todd, to fly fish.

In addition to her husband of 62 years, Mrs. Masters is survived by her daughter, Rhonda Masters Elrod (Steve) of Arlington, TN; her son, Thomas Mark Masters of Oakland; two grandchildren, Thomas Clay Masters, Jennifer Elrod Hicks; and five great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her grandson, Philip Todd Elrod, who died in 2007.

Those honored to serve as casketbearers were David Dement, Steve Elrod, Skyler Hicks, Tommy Hicks, Billy Sharp and Clay Masters.
