Phillip Lewis Dodge, resident of the Oakland Community, U.S. Veteran, retired firefighter and husband of Barbara Thompson Dodge died Saturday evening, January 28, 2012 at the Methodist University Hospital in Memphis where he had been a patient for one month. He was 68 years of age and died following an illness of six months.
A Celebration of Life Service for Mr. Dodge was conducted at 1 P.M. Tuesday, January 31st at the First Baptist Church of Fisherville with Rev. Jack Moore of the church officiating. He was assisted by Chaplain Charlie Covington. Interment with Military Honors followed in the Fisherville First Baptist Church Cemetery. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes and Cremation Center — West Chapel of Oakland.
Mr. Dodge was born September 20, 1943 in Columbus, Kentucky. He was preceded in death by his parents, William Lewis Dodge and Edrie Arnold Dodge. He received his education in the Kentucky Public School System and served his country for 4 years in the U.S. Marine Corps.
He was married March 27, 1965 to the former Barbara Thompson, retired from the office of internal medicine in Memphis, who survives. Mr. and Mrs. Dodge were former residents of Memphis before moving to Fayette County in 1999. Mr. Dodge was a firefighter for the City of Memphis for over 30 years before his retirement in 1997.
He was a devoted member of the First Baptist Church at Fisherville and will be remembered as a devoted Christian full of Godly character. Mr. Dodge loved his family and enjoyed woodworking, carpentry, gardening, hunting, hiking, camping, nature and all outdoor activities. Family members of Mr. Dodge remember him as a person who “did justice, loved mercy and walked humbly with his God.” Micah 6:8
In addition to his wife, Mr. Dodge is survived by his daughter, Carri Leigh Dodge of Memphis; his son, Craig Bennett Dodge (Christina Ann) of Oakland; his sister, Wanda June Dodge McClanahan of Clinton, KY; and one granddaughter, Carmen Hunt Dodge of Oakland. Mr. Dodge was preceded in death by four sisters.
Those honored to serve as casketbearers were Cronin Lovett, Tom Keeling, Jim Kiser, Ben Chappell, Bob Wilkerson, David Harrison, Larry Jones, Dennis Cates, Ken Daniel, Danny Lemmons, Glenn Terhune, Johnie Mynatt, Ray Ingle and Gene Kennedy.
The family requests that memorials be directed to the Navajo Missions Fund of the First Baptist Church at Fisherville, 11893 Macon Road, Eads, TN 38028.
