PHILIP WAYNE OVERTON, a resident of the Oakland Community and retired Locomotive Engineer died at 5:18 P.M. Tuesday, August 4, 2009 at his home on Snowbell Cove. He was 72 years of age and died following an extended illness.
Funeral services for Mr. Overton were conducted at 12 Noon Friday, August 7th at the Peebles West Funeral Chapel at Oakland with Pastor John Van Zyl of the Memphis First Seventh Day Adventist Church in Cordova, officiating. He was assisted by Pastor Don Ritterskamp. A private family interment will take place in the Fayette County Memorial Park Cemetery on Highway 64. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes-West Chapel of Oakland.
Mr. Overton was born March 20 1937 in West Helena Arkansas. He was preceded in death by his parents, Adam Thomas Overton and Margaret Reeves Overton.
He was a former resident of Memphis before moving to Fayette County and was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church.
Mr. Overton served as a Locomotive Engineer, for the Illinois Central Railroad Company for 42 years, before his retirement 11 years ago.
He was married August 16, 1986 to the former Linda Williams, who survives.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Overton is survived by his daughter, Janet Lynn Floyd of Olive Branch, MS; two step-daughters, Melissa Jane Cirtain of Madison, AL and Heather Lea Shook of Durango, CO; his son, Richard Wayne Overton of Fort Collins, CO; two sisters, Marilyn Joyce Hicks of Southaven and Carolyn Sue Pickle of Horn Lake, MS and six grandchildren.
