Sarah Phyllis McIntyre, resident of the Somerville Community, former longtime Memphis resident and retired nurse died Wednesday morning, August 8, 2012 at the National Health Care Center in Somerville where she had been a resident for three weeks. She was 84 years of age and died following an extended illness.
Services of Remembrance for Ms. McIntyre were conducted at 1 P.M. Friday, August 10th at the Peebles Main Funeral Chapel in Somerville with Bro. Phil Lovelace of Brownsville and Dr. Ken Story of Somerville officiating. Interment followed in the Somerville City Cemetery. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes and Cremation Center — Main Chapel in Somerville.
Ms. McIntyre was born August 5, 1928 in Selmer, Tennessee. She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas Napol McIntyre and Ella Pearl Byrd McIntyre. She received her education in the Peabody Private School System in Memphis and was a resident of Memphis for many years before moving to the Somerville Community to be near her family. She had been involved with healthcare for much of her life and in earlier years served as a nurse for the Armstrong Clinic in Somerville. She was employed for 29 years as a nurse for the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Memphis before her retirement 9 years ago.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Somerville and her interests included gardening, following the Memphis State University Tiger Basketball program and square dancing. Ms. McIntyre will be remembered as a family-oriented person who was devoted to caring for others and enjoyed special times with her canine companion, Sophie.
Ms. McIntyre is survived by her daughter, Judy Kelley of Somerville; three sisters, Flo Downs of Sacramento, CA, Dottie McClain of Corinth, MS, Evelyn Lubey of Las Vegas, NV; her grandson, Raymond Kelley, Jr. (Mimi) of Somerville; and two great grandchildren, Valerie Griffin (Jonathan) of Somerville and Brittany Kelley of Memphis.
Those honored to serve as casketbearers were Joe Grant, Mark Cooper, Doug Kennon, David Kelley, Tommy Kelley III and Mike Atkeison.
Honorary casketbearers were Jerry Moore, Dan Moore, Wayne Moore and Michael Niles.
