PORTRIS ORVIS DAVIS

April 23, 1929 — February 16, 2010

PORTRIS ORVIS DAVIS, a resident of the Moscow Community in Fayette County and retired Memphis Street Railway Employee died Tuesday morning, February 16, 2010 at the Baptist Memorial Hospital in Collierville where he had been a patient for a day. He was 80 years of age and died following a brief illness.

Funeral services for Mr. Davis were conducted at 11 A.M. Friday, February 19th at the Peebles West Funeral Chapel at Oakland with Rev. Eddie Little, Pastor of the Hickory Withe First Baptist Church, officiating. Interment and Graveside Services followed at 3:30 p.m. in the North Union Baptist Church Cemetery in the West Community near Kosciusko, Mississippi. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes-West Chapel of Oakland.

Mr. Davis was born in the West Community on April 23, 1929 the son of the late Willie Onles Davis and Rosa Lee McGarah Davis. He received his education in the Attala County, Mississippi Public School System and was married to the former Shirley Gammel, who survives.

Mr. Davis was a former resident of Senatobia, Mississippi and had been a resident of Fayette County for the past thirteen years.

He was employed for thirty-five years as a Mechanic for the Memphis Street Railway System before his retirement fifteen years ago.

Mr. Davis was a member of the Bellevue Baptist Church in Memphis and was a Mason. He served for a number of years on the Board of the Memphis Transit Union.

His interests included fishing, hunting and gardening. In later years, he received enjoyment from attending auctions throughout the area and repairing automobiles.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Davis is survived by his sister, Blanche Olene Davis Corbin of Monticello, AR; his brother, Jesse A. Davis (Vivian) of Arlington; two nieces, Phyllis Davis and Melanie Corbin; three nephews: Don Corbin, Kevin Corbin and Charles Corbin and one great-nephew, Caleb Corbin.

The family requests that memorials be directed to the North Union Baptist Church in West, Mississippi.
