Quinton Garvis Jenkins, resident of the Somerville Community, retired Fayette County Farmer and husband of Mary Kathryn "Susie" Jenkins died at 11:45 P.M. Monday, February 16, 2009 at the Methodist Hospital Fayette in Somerville where he had been a patient for one day. He was 88 years of age and died following an illness of several weeks.
Funeral Services for Mr. Jenkins were conducted at 2 P.M. Wednesday, February 18th at Peebles Main Funeral Chapel in Somerville with Rev. Will Barnes, Pastor of the Bethlehem Baptist Church at Rossville officiating. Interment followed in the Somerville City Cemetery. Arrangements were provided by Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes-Main Chapel of Somerville.
Mr. Jenkins was a native of Dutton, Alabama, the son of the late James Allen Jenkins and the late Lovie Jane Carter Jenkins.
He was married April 11, 1941 to the former Mary Kathryn Stewart who survives. Mrs. Jenkins operated Susie's Dress Shop on the Somerville Court Square for a number of years before her retirement.
A person who loved nature and the good earth, Mr. Jenkins was an Independent Farm Operator for much of his life before retiring in 1981. He was of the Baptist faith and will be remembered for his strong work ethic and his appreciation for the simple things of life.
He enjoyed special times with his family and grandchildren and hunting and fishing were favorite pastimes in earlier years.
In addition to his wife of sixty-seven years, Mr. Jenkins is survived by two sons, Richard S. Jenkins (Regina) of Somerville and Rodney S. Jenkins (Pat) of Jackson, TN; seven grandchildren: Sandra Burnette, Sharon Bishop, Russell S. Jenkins, Ronald H. Jenkins, Ryan S. Jenkins, Joseph C. Jenkins, Joshua A. Jenkins and a number of great- and great-great-granchildren.
He was preceded in death by his son, Thomas Clinton Jenkins.
Those honored to serve as casket bearers were Charlie Bishop, Ken Burnette, Joseph Jenkins, Joshua Jenkins, Ronald Jenkins and Russell Jenkins.
